Talking about Sa Pa, Lao Cai province means talking about “the town in the clouds”, a cool place in the summer, a place to hunt for snow in the winter. This is also the place where Fansipan peak is located - the highest mountain in Vietnam. To develop Sa Pa tourism to its full potential, Lao Cai province and Sa Pa town aim to build Sa Pa into a clean ASEAN tourist city.

Within the framework of the Sa Pa Culture - Tourism Festival in Hanoi, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (Ngo Quyen Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi), the People's Committee of Sa Pa town organized a workshop on "Solutions to develop the Sa Pa National Tourist Area in a unique, attractive, friendly and professional manner - Towards a clean ASEAN tourist city".

Sa Pa is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Vietnam. It has Fansipan peak with a height of 3,147 m, known as the "roof of Indochina" that everyone wants to conquer. Located at a high altitude, Sa Pa is cool in the summer, an ideal place to avoid the heat; at the same time, it is a favorite snow hunting spot for many people in the winter. Sa Pa is also a place where tourists can explore the villages of ethnic minorities such as Mong, Dao, Giay, Tay... In particular, Sa Pa was officially recognized as a National Tourist Area in 2017. This is a great advantage for the development of Sa Pa in general and Sa Pa tourism in particular.

Chairman of Sa Pa Town People's Committee To Ngoc Lien said: "In recent years, Sa Pa tourism has made great strides. In 2023, the town welcomed more than 3.68 million visitors, with revenue reaching 12,707 billion VND. The goal by 2025 is that Sa Pa will welcome 5.8 million visitors, with revenue reaching 27,900 billion VND.

Currently, the town has 711 accommodation establishments, 283 food service establishments, 90 souvenir and gift service establishments... gradually meeting the rich and diverse needs of tourists. We are very happy that Sa Pa tourism has received impressive votes such as Top 10 most attractive tourist destinations in Southeast Asia; Top 14 most attractive destinations in Asia; 1/10 most beautiful snow viewing spots in Asia... From this foundation, Sa Pa town has determined the goal of becoming an ASEAN Clean Tourist City by 2025".

To realize this goal, Sa Pa town has been implementing projects and plans for investment in building infrastructure, transportation systems, accommodation facilities, tourism services, etc.; including essential infrastructure to ensure meeting the criteria of an ASEAN Clean Tourist City (environmental treatment system; building clean and hygienic streets; good management and treatment of waste and wastewater; investing in green spaces in urban areas; having good conditions to ensure health safety and urban security for tourists, etc.). Sa Pa also promotes the construction of a green city and a green lifestyle.

In addition, the town invests and calls for investment, completes key tourism projects in the town; applies international standards in training activities to standardize human resources; prioritizes training and use of local human resources; raises awareness of developing Sa Pa National Tourist Area to international standards. The town also strengthens the implementation of research and investment in developing tourism products in the direction of rich local cultural and natural identity.

At the workshop, experts discussed and proposed many solutions to develop sustainable tourism in Sa Pa. Standing member of the National Assembly's Committee for Culture and Education, Associate Professor Bui Hoai Son said: Sa Pa's orientation to become an ASEAN Clean Tourism City is in line with the current world trend. Therefore, it is necessary to orient Sa Pa to become a tourism brand not only of Vietnam but also of the world. To do so, it is necessary to strengthen the protection and preservation of core values of natural landscapes and cultural identities of ethnic minorities; build unique, friendly, quality, attractive tourism products and must have outstanding features to create competitive advantages and affirm the Sa Pa tourism brand.

General Secretary of the Vietnam Tourism Association Vu Quoc Tri also wondered about solutions to help Sa Pa tourism make breakthroughs: “Currently, developing sustainable tourism is extremely important. To develop sustainable tourism, the way to do it is responsible tourism. Responsibility here is responsibility to the environment, society and economy. We must preserve the environment; create a civilized and friendly environment; bring economic benefits to local people. This is very important for Sa Pa. We also have to "position" Sa Pa tourism. For example, we strive to achieve the goal that if you have not traveled to Sa Pa, you do not know anything about Vietnam tourism. In addition, we must have assessments and surveys on the needs of tourists in order to build products and services that meet their needs in a sustainable way.”

Within the framework of the Sa Pa Culture - Tourism Festival in Hanoi, many cultural and artistic activities, introducing and promoting Sa Pa tourism will take place at Ly Thai To Flower Garden, part of the walking street around Hoan Kiem Lake from April 5-7.
