On the afternoon of September 11, Mr. Nguyen Duy Hoa, Secretary of the Bac Ha District Party Committee, Lao Cai Province confirmed that at 2:00 p.m. on September 10, a serious landslide occurred in Nam Luc commune, burying 8 houses in Nam Tong village.
The sudden landslide, with a very large volume, killed 7 people, 11 people went missing and 11 injured people were taken to Bao Nhai General Clinic for emergency treatment.
Due to landslides cutting off traffic and losing telecommunication signals, communication between the district and the landslide area was interrupted.
Rescue work here encountered many difficulties due to the fragmented terrain, it took the forces many hours to reach the landslide site. Currently, the search for missing victims has been temporarily suspended due to continued landslides.
According to the Secretary of the Bac Ha District Party Committee, the risk of landslides is still high, which poses a danger to rescue forces. "We are currently calculating options to search for the missing people to ensure both safety and the fastest progress," said Mr. Hoa.
As of 5:00 p.m. on September 11, the death toll in Bac Ha district had reached 51. Of these, 15 people died, 19 were missing; 17 were injured; and over 1,400 houses were damaged.
The district mobilized forces to organize search and rescue. However, the implementation was very difficult. On September 10-11, the provincial working group led by Mr. Vu Xuan Cuong, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; the mobile force of Lao Cai Provincial Police, 2 mobile teams of the district, together with relief forces inside and outside the province, organized response, approached to search and rescue.
Bac Ha district has requested the People's Committee of Lao Cai province and related departments and branches to mobilize forces to coordinate with the district to support landslides, flooding, power outages, and ensure traffic and communication in the district to serve the work of overcoming the consequences caused by natural disasters./.
