Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Marc E. Knapper expressed his pleasure to be here to witness the close cooperation between US agencies and Bach Mai Hospital, thereby contributing to the development of Bach Mai Hospital to become one of the leading medical facilities in Vietnam.

According to Ambassador Marc E. Knapper, in 2021, the US Department of Defense donated a genome sequencer to Bach Mai Hospital, laying the foundation for Vietnam's ability to monitor COVID-19 variants. This sequencer is being used for other infectious diseases. As a result, Bach Mai Hospital has become one of the first clinical laboratories in Vietnam capable of independently analyzing whole genome sequences. This has had a significant impact on public health, allowing for improved identification and response to major influenza strains and SARS-CoV-2.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, spoke at the working session with US Ambassador Marc E. Knapper and the delegation.

Meanwhile, Vietnam also provided a lot of masks and medical equipment to support the United States in the difficult context due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020. According to the US Ambassador, this is valuable support, demonstrating the close cooperation between the two countries, especially in the medical field.

Sharing at the meeting, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that the United States has provided a lot of medical support to Vietnam in the past. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, through the Covax mechanism, the United States provided Vietnam with nearly 50 million doses of vaccine and 34 deep freezers to preserve vaccines. With this practical support, Vietnam has overcome the pandemic successfully so far, minimizing as much damage as possible.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, in addition to the next-generation gene sequencing machine donated by the US Department of Defense, the US CDC has provided additional essential equipment and on-site technical support for the staff of the Microbiology Department as well as supported 3 staff members participating in the project to study at the laboratory at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, USA. The support for improving human resources for Bach Mai Hospital does not stop at the Hospital itself, but as a frontline hospital and satellite of the Northern region, Bach Mai Hospital will expand training for laboratories at lower levels.

At the same time, Bach Mai Hospital is always proud to contribute to the achievements of medical cooperation between the two countries and will continue to strive to promote cooperation, together aiming to strengthen global health security cooperation, bringing Vietnam to play an active role in the regional and international medical supply chain.

At the meeting, representatives of Bach Mai Hospital hoped that the US Ambassador would continue to pay attention and help the Hospital carry out activities on training cooperation, scientific research, and technology transfer so that the Hospital would have more opportunities to learn, improve quality and professional qualifications to serve patients better and better.

In response to the proposal of Bach Mai Hospital, Ambassador Marc E. Knapper and the US delegation pledged to continue to care for and support the Hospital in training activities, scientific research, technology transfer, and to further develop and strengthen the medical cooperation relationship between the two countries.

The US Ambassador and his delegation offered incense at the Bach Mai Hospital Memorial.

Over the past 20 years, in the field of health cooperation, the United States has provided much support to Vietnam in disease prevention and public health protection. In 2004, Vietnam was selected as one of 15 countries prioritized to receive aid from the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) worth 15 billion USD to fight the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. In 2013, along with Uganda, Vietnam was one of two countries selected to implement the Global Health Security Initiative. As a result of this demonstration project, in 2014, Vietnam became one of the first 30 countries selected to receive support from the US Government to develop model systems to promote the Global Health Security Agenda and was one of 10 priority countries to receive direct technical and financial assistance from the US CDC./.
