A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the evening of August 30 said that at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the ASEAN Chair 2023, Joko Widodo, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh will lead the Vietnamese delegation to attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related Summits in Jakarta, Indonesia from September 4 to 7, 2023.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that leaders of 22 countries and several international organizations will attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related conferences taking place from September 5-7.
Speaking at an event on August 28, Foreign Minister Retno said that the participating countries include 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); Timor Leste as an observer; 9 dialogue partner countries which are also members of the East Asia Summit (EAS - including South Korea, Japan, India, China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, and the United States); and 2 guest countries: Bangladesh (Chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association - IORA) and Cook Islands (Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum - PIF).
According to Ms. Retno, this is the largest ASEAN Summit ever held with the participation of ASEAN 11, along with many EAS member countries.
She affirmed that the above-mentioned composition of participants also reflects the inclusive approach set out in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
In addition to the opening and closing ceremonies of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, from September 5-7, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, ASEAN Chair 2023, will chair 12 meetings, including the plenary session and the retreat session of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, meetings between ASEAN and its partners China, South Korea, Japan, the US, Canada, India, Australia, the United Nations and EAS member countries.
The 43rd ASEAN Summit Series will focus on four main areas, including establishing the foundation for ASEAN’s Long-term Vision, making ASEAN more resilient to respond to the challenges of the times, making ASEAN a hub for economic growth, and transforming the Indo-Pacific into a region of peace and prosperity.
