The Canadian Prime Minister's visit comes as Ukraine prepares for a major counteroffensive against Russian forces and faces frequent airstrikes. Justin Trudeau met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, addressed the Ukrainian parliament and visited a memorial to Ukrainian soldiers killed since 2014.

As a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Canada - a country with one of the largest Ukrainian communities in the world - has provided financial and military support to Kiev after Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.

During his visit to Kiev, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would "provide $500 million in new military aid" and pledged to provide more weapons and train fighter pilots.

In a 25-minute speech before the Ukrainian Parliament, the Canadian leader affirmed his support for Ukraine's efforts to join NATO.

Ukraine now wants to become a member of this military alliance as soon as possible, but President Zelensky admitted that it cannot happen while the war with Russia continues.

Trudeau's trip to Kiev comes after a night of Russian missile and drone attacks on targets outside the capital, including Odesa, the Poltava region and Kharkov.
