Meritorious Artist Duc Luu was born in 1939 in Ba Vi, Hanoi. She became famous for her role as Thi No in the film "Vu Dai Village of the Past" . When mentioning the role of Thi No, people talk about her, so she is happy when someone recognizes her on the street and calls her "Thi No".
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Meritorious Artist Duc Luu said that after entering the Cultural School of the General Department of Politics, she was sent to the Vietnam Cinema School, course I in 1957 to study with actors such as: People's Artist Lam Toi, People's Artist Tra Giang...
She then returned to the feature film studio (now the Vietnam Feature Film Studio) and worked until her retirement. She said that Thi No in the film Vu Dai Village was her fateful role.
At that time, director Pham Van Khoa spent a whole year looking for an actress to play Thi No. Nearly 20 people auditioned for the role but all failed.
"One summer afternoon, when I was at home on Trieu Viet Vuong Street (Hanoi), director Pham Van Khoa knocked on the door. When I saw him, I knew right away that he was looking for actors for his film.
After that, Mr. Khoa and I talked and he gave me the script of the movie Vu Dai Village back then . When I read the script, I felt like "a fish in water", the role of Thi No belonged to me, I was so lucky", she recalled.
Mrs. Duc Luu added that she has "benefited" from Thi No her whole life. The benefit is fame, because since playing this role, everyone knows her even though it is not a long role.
"My fortune is not money but the opportunity to work and meet many people. After the movie "Vu Dai Village" was shown, Bui Cuong (who played Chi Pheo) and I were invited to speak in many places, so we also got to know each other better.
At that time, we were only invited to give talks but had no income. We still lived on the artist's salary paid by the Film Studio," Meritorious Artist Duc Luu confided.
When the reporter asked: "Many people say that Meritorious Artist Duc Luu is worthy of the title of People's Artist, so will you apply this time?"
The female artist told Dan Tri reporter that she did not apply for the People's Artist title because since retiring, she has not participated in films and has not had the opportunity to participate in performances and art festivals to win medals.
"The people at the Cinema Department said, 'You should prepare the application for People's Artist status, we will help you with the procedures, but I think being a Meritorious Artist is enough, many people know me better than being a People's Artist.
I don't care about titles. Before, I received the title of Meritorious Artist very slowly because I didn't apply. I think the title is not important. Just being an artist of the people is enough," she confided.

At the age of 84, artist Duc Luu is still very healthy and enthusiastic about charity work. She has two successful sons and talented grandchildren.
Previously, she lived with her youngest son in Xa Dan (Hanoi), but since her son moved to Ho Chi Minh City, she often travels between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to visit her children and grandchildren.
"For over a year now, I have been living in Ho Chi Minh City with my youngest son and his wife. Occasionally, I still go to Hanoi to visit my family and do charity work in the highlands. Even though I am 84 years old, I do not like to sit still. Every day, I wake up at 6am, meditate for about an hour, then have breakfast and take my grandchildren to school, and pick them up in the afternoon.
The female artist added that while her grandchildren go to school, she stays home reading books and watching TV. She also often goes for walks and meets friends by taxi.
She said: "I am happy because my children are grown up, and my grandchildren are also very talented. I still study by myself, every day. I want to teach my grandchildren to always strive, no matter how I am, I am not as good as anyone else, I need to practice more to have a better life."
The female artist said that her husband, Professor, Doctor Tran Ha Phuong, passed away 10 years ago. Sometimes, she feels unsteady but not sad. She often listens to instrumental classical music, revolutionary songs, Buddhist scriptures... whenever she remembers her life partner.
She said: "When I had a husband, I relied on him a lot. He was a serious person, I was influenced by him a lot. When he passed away, I thought I wouldn't be able to get up, but in the end I was still steadfast, relying on my children and grandchildren to live.
I am also lonely sometimes, but this loneliness is due to external factors. I find society very complicated. People nowadays are too pragmatic and calculating, it is very difficult to find someone who sympathizes with you.
