Many of the world’s leading enterprises in the fields of AI and semiconductors see Vietnam as a new destination with many cooperation opportunities. And as a “rising star”, Vietnam is gradually realizing its dream of participating fully in the world’s AI and semiconductor ecosystem.

Going further on the world AI map
Not only has Vietnam surpassed the world average for 3 consecutive years in the Government AI Readiness Index, it has also risen to 5th/10 in the ASEAN region and increased 3 places to 59th/193 in the world rankings. This is Vietnam's ranking given by Oxford Insights in the report "Government AI Readiness Index 2023" based on 2023 data.
In 2024, Vietnam will have more incentives to be ready to go further on the world AI map. In early February 2024, the Government approved the National Data Strategy and many ministries, branches and localities have also issued action plans and programs to implement this Strategy. This is an important basis and data for developing artificial intelligence in Vietnam.
“25 years ago, FPT nurtured the dream of exporting software. To date, Vietnam has 1 million people working in the IT sector, serving many customers around the world. Today, we nurture another dream: AI Nation - Vietnam will become the AI and semiconductor center of the region. And we will have 3-5% of the population working in the AI field.” Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT |
From a business perspective, there have been many programs, even large investments of hundreds of millions of USD to promote AI development. One of them is the expected investment of up to 200 million USD for the establishment of an AI Factory signed between NVIDIA and FPT - Vietnam's leading technology group and ranked in the Top 50 IT service companies in Asia. This AI factory is considered to have great significance in promoting the economy, a boost to help Vietnam develop the semiconductor and AI industry, and stay ahead of the world's technology development trends.
At the signing ceremony, Mr. Keith Strier, Vice President of NVIDIA Global AI Initiatives, affirmed that NVIDIA and FPT will accompany Vietnamese enterprises with the goal of accelerating digital transformation, making Vietnam an AI Powerhouse.
Sharing about the cooperation with NVIDIA, Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT said, “25 years ago, FPT nurtured the dream of exporting software. Up to now, Vietnam has 1 million people working in the IT field, serving many customers around the world. Today, we nurture another dream: AI Nation - Vietnam will become the AI and semiconductor center of the region. And we will have 3-5% of the population working in the AI field”.
The cooperation between FPT and Landing AI is expected to open a new chapter, contributing to promoting the development of AI in Vietnam, the US and the world. |
Mr. Binh explained the basis of this dream based on 3 factors. First, Vietnam currently has 1% of its population working in the IT field. If it switches to researching and developing AI and semiconductors, Vietnam can progress much faster and further. Second, Vietnam has stepped out into the world and has a brand on the world digital technology map. Vietnamese enterprises have provided IT solutions and services to the world and are strategic partners of leading enterprises in the AI and semiconductor fields. Third, the flow of AI and semiconductor technology, led by leading corporations and experts, is pouring into Vietnam and fortunately, FPT is at the center of this flow.
Before joining hands with NVIDIA, FPT also joined hands with the world's "AI geniuses" such as Professor Yoshua Bengio - Director of the world's leading AI research institute Mila, Dr. Andrew Ng, founder and CEO of Landing AI.
Currently, FPT has its own million-dollar project in the field of AI and owns the artificial intelligence platform FPT.AI with 20 million users, 200 million uses/month in 15 countries. At the same time, FPT is also integrating AI into Made by FPT solutions and products to help organizations and businesses optimize management, operations, and improve operational efficiency. Most recently, the comprehensive AI-based grassland management solution in Africa developed by FPT has been successfully deployed for more than 2 million African farmers, creating incredible efficiency in the process of grazing cattle in the desert.

New destination for semiconductor businesses
Along with AI, the semiconductor industry is considered a key technology duo for future global economic growth. In Vietnam, the semiconductor industry is forecast to surpass the 6 billion USD milestone, making Vietnam one of the important production centers of many large semiconductor enterprises worldwide. Many leading enterprises in the world's semiconductor manufacturing industry have chosen Vietnam as an investment destination with projects worth billions of USD. Most recently, Amkor's largest semiconductor factory in the world worth 1.6 billion USD was inaugurated in Bac Ninh.
Enterprises from the two semiconductor powerhouses, the US and Japan, are also making big plans for the semiconductor sector in Vietnam. For example, at the ASEAN-Japan 50th Anniversary Summit held late last year, SBI Holdings CEO Yoshitaka Kitao said that the group is building semiconductor chip factories in Japan and will consider expanding investment abroad in the future, with Vietnam and the Middle East considered attractive destinations. Mr. Yoshitaka Kitao also expressed his desire to cooperate with large Vietnamese enterprises in the information technology sector, such as FPT, to build a semiconductor chip manufacturing technology ecosystem in Vietnam.
In September 2023, in the joint statement on the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two sides acknowledged Vietnam's great potential to become a key country in the semiconductor industry. Vietnam is one of the few countries with which the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop the semiconductor industry ecosystem, emphasizing cooperation in developing human resources for the industry. Currently, Vietnam aims to train 50,000 semiconductor workers and FPT plans to train about 20% of this target number, equivalent to about 10,000 workers by 2030. However, Mr. Binh said that today's IC design training program is just the first step, FPT still wants much more. "Our dream is to meet the human resource needs of the whole world. That is our real dream - Vietnam has 1 million semiconductor workers," Mr. Binh emphasized.
To realize the above target, FPT Education has established a university-level semiconductor microchip department and brought semiconductor chip training programs from India and the UK to teach at the college and joint training system. Most recently, FPT has also cooperated with financial consulting firm FCC Partners to establish a fund to develop human resources and attract foreign investment in the semiconductor microchip industry in Vietnam.

Vietnam's time has come
Vietnam is becoming a new destination for the world’s leading technology and semiconductor companies. And according to Mr. Binh, “the time has come for the nation. Vietnam is the country chosen to participate fully in the world’s semiconductor ecosystem.”
Mr. Binh also affirmed, “Vietnam will pioneer in the production of new generation chips - AI chips. Based on AI chips, Vietnam will pioneer the production of AI electronic devices, forming an AI economy. Vietnam will become an AI country. AI transformation will be the fulcrum for Vietnam to succeed in digital transformation, green transformation, and building a circular economy. The country's future has never been as "bright" as today. Vietnam cannot miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that history has placed in its hands. In particular, the semiconductor industry has many special features. I hope there will be more cooperation with foreign enterprises so that Vietnam becomes a destination for this industry."
