At a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on February 4 (local time), US President Donald Trump made the shocking proposal, affirming that he would turn the war-torn Gaza Strip into "unbelievable" by clearing mines, rubble and promoting economic development.
President Trump declared: "The United States will take over the Gaza Strip and we will work with it. We will own it" and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East."
For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the US leader's plan could "change history".
However, Mr. Trump's idea immediately met with opposition from many countries around the world.
In the Middle East , the Hamas Islamist movement in the Gaza Strip said that the US President's proposal is similar to Israel's view on relocating Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and eliminating the Palestinian struggle for a two-state solution. According to Hamas, implementing this proposal will only escalate tensions in the Middle East region.
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) also strongly rejected Mr. Trump's statement on relocating residents of the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries. PLO Executive Committee Secretary General Hussein al-Sheikh stressed that the two-state solution, based on international law, remains the only viable path to peace and stability.
On the same day, speaking on Fox News , a spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry stated: “We understand that Palestinians will be traumatized if they are forced to relocate. However, once again, it is too early to talk about this possibility, because we still do not know how the current war will end.”
Meanwhile, Jordan declared its opposition to “any attempt to seize land and expel Palestinians,” while Egypt called for the rapid reconstruction of Gaza, noting that the Palestinian Authority should “assume its duties” and that people should not have to leave the strip.
In Türkiye, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the White House boss's comments about plans to take over the conflict-torn Gaza Strip were "unacceptable", stressing that any plan to "remove Palestinians" from the area would cause more conflict.
In Europe , Russia and many US allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) also expressed opposition to the proposal of the 47th US President.
From Russia, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that this proposal is a manifestation of breaking the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UN), while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the only way to resolve the Middle East conflict is through the establishment of a Palestinian state that exists parallel to Israel.
According to Mr. Peskov, this is a point recorded in the UN Security Council resolution, shared by the overwhelming majority of countries involved in this issue, while noting that Arab countries also rejected the idea of resettling Palestinians raised by the US President.
France, a NATO ally of the US, stated on the same day that no third party should control Gaza, emphasizing that Paris will continue to advocate for the two-state solution, the only solution that can ensure lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Sharing the same view, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy believes that it is necessary to promote the achievement of a two-state solution, stressing the need to ensure that Palestinians have a future in their homeland in Gaza and the West Bank.
On the German side, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that the Gaza Strip "belongs to the Palestinian people" and "it is not allowed to expel civilians in Gaza and this land must not be permanently occupied or resettled".
According to the German diplomat, Gaza - as well as the West Bank and East Jerusalem - "belongs to the Palestinian people. This is the foundation for the future Palestinian State".
The German government said Berlin will continue to work with global partners towards a two-state solution in the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.
In the Americas , Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has denounced his US counterpart's proposal as "nonsense", while in Oceania , Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has affirmed that his country supports a two-state solution to the Gaza crisis.
