Facing a team that was rated lower, on the evening of April 5, the Vietnamese women's team still fielded their strongest lineup when facing Nepal to take all 3 points, to gain the right to decide for themselves the ticket to the second qualifying round of the 2024 Olympic women's football.
The Vietnamese team started the match quite cautiously. At the beginning of the first half, the Vietnamese defense lost focus for a moment, allowing Nepal to create a dangerous situation, but their inaccurate finishing helped coach Mai Duc Chung and his team escape a goal in the 9th minute. A minute later, Vietnam created a series of dangerous situations and got the opening goal 1-0 from Pham Hai Yen.
The Vietnamese team entered the match quite cautiously.
In the last 10 minutes of the first half, the female players gradually "warmed up" and played quite well. From the situation where the opponent let the ball touch their hand in the penalty area, Huynh Nhu took advantage of the opportunity to double the score on the penalty spot. Before the first half ended, Bich Thuy had a one-touch shot that hit a Nepal defender, raising the score to 3-0.
After the break, Vietnam continued their momentum, Huynh Nhu headed the goal to increase the score to 4-0 and brought home a double for himself in the 47th minute. With a 4-goal gap, coach Mai Duc Chung began to adjust the personnel, gradually sending young players onto the field.
Closing the match, Vietnam won 5-1 against Nepal
With only 10 minutes left in the match, Nepal scored a consolation goal. Meanwhile, the young players sent onto the field by coach Mai Duc Chung did not disappoint their 73-year-old coach. In the 90th minute, Thanh Nha dribbled near the sideline, shot and created a superb long-range shot into the top corner of the goal, surprising the Nepalese goalkeeper, who had no chance to block it. At the end of the match, Vietnam won 5-1.
After this victory, the Vietnamese team only needs a draw in the remaining match to qualify for the second round of the 2024 Olympics. On April 8, the Vietnamese and Nepali women's teams will have their final match in the 2024 Olympics women's football qualifiers.
