The hidden value of treasures under the forest canopy
Thanh Hoa is blessed with more than 1,000 species of medicinal plants, including 529 rare species, such as Black Mugwort, Seven-leaf One-flower, Golden Orchid, Gynostemma, and Red Polygonum. These plants not only have great medicinal value, but also contain sustainable economic potential, especially for mountainous areas where traditional farming is difficult.
However, natural medicinal resources are also facing the risk of extinction due to overexploitation and degradation of the forest environment. Faced with this reality, Thanh Hoa has developed a long-term strategy, combining biodiversity conservation and sustainable exploitation, gradually restoring precious values from nature.
In recent years, Pu Luong Nature Reserve has become a bright spot in the conservation and propagation of Black Artemisia - one of the typical medicinal plants of Thanh Hoa mountainous region. From 2019 to 2022, the project to conserve this plant species on an area of 0.5 hectares of Pa Ban village community forest, Thanh Son commune, Ba Thuoc district has shown remarkable effectiveness. Not only helping to restore the species, the project also opens up economic development opportunities from medicinal products, bringing a stable source of income for local people.
Along with that, other precious medicinal herbs such as Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Seven-leaf-one-flower, or Codonopsis pilosula are also being tested and preserved. The positive results have demonstrated the ability to harmoniously combine natural resource conservation and economic value exploitation.
Mr. Le Thanh Huu, Deputy Director of Pu Luong Nature Reserve said: “Black wormwood is a valuable medicinal plant with high economic efficiency. It prefers mountainous climates and is a medicinal plant that can help people in the highlands escape poverty. The unit has coordinated with local authorities to widely propagate the shift in crop structure, creating a source of seeds for people; committed to supporting 50% of medicinal seeds for people growing this plant by 2025.”
Spreading green economic models
In the mountainous districts of Quan Hoa and Lang Chanh, the experimental cultivation of indigenous medicinal plants under the forest canopy has yielded positive results. The endemic medicinal plants not only grow well but also achieve productivity and quality equivalent to those growing in the natural environment.
Many medicinal plant growing models have initially brought about encouraging economic efficiency, such as the model of growing 3 medicinal plant species in Nam Dong Species Conservation Area, blood vine and ivy in Quan Hoa, or Ngoc Linh ginseng and Kim Tuyen orchid of Song Ma Joint Stock Company in Nang Cat village, Tri Nang commune, Lang Chanh district. In addition, the purple khôi tree model in Ben En National Park also made an important mark.
The successes of these models not only affirm the potential of precious medicinal herbs but also open up great opportunities to attract programs, projects and businesses to invest in large-scale planting and processing of medicinal herbs in Thanh Hoa.
Mr. Le Thanh Cong, a technical officer of Lang Chanh Protective Forest Management Board, said that the unit is implementing a model of growing golden orchids - a rare medicinal herb with high economic value. Before implementation, soil samples and climate conditions were carefully studied to ensure suitability. Thanks to that, the experimental planting model through many phases has given positive results with a survival rate of 70-80%.
Mr. Cong shared that after the model is successful, the unit will multiply, expand the growing area and transfer techniques as well as seed sources to the people in the mountainous areas, helping them develop the economy, improve their lives and escape poverty.
Mr. Le Van Thao, a resident participating in the model, excitedly informed: "Income from medicinal herbs is 2-3 times higher than traditional corn and cassava cultivation. In addition, people can also stop deforestation for farming."
According to Mr. Le Duc Thuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province, the conservation and development of medicinal herbs is not only the task of the agricultural sector but also requires the cooperation of businesses, organizations and communities. Currently, the province has built 16 models of growing medicinal herbs under the forest canopy, with a total area of 99,000 hectares and an output of 550 tons/year.
In the coming time, Thanh Hoa will promote investment attraction from enterprises in the medicinal value chain, from cultivation, processing to product distribution. At the same time, the province continues to replicate effective production models, transfer science and technology, and support plant varieties for people to develop the local economy.
