Although the Tet atmosphere is still bustling, Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc of Ngo Xa Dong Cooperative, Trieu Trung Commune, Trieu Phong District still takes the time to go to the field to prune his more than 15 hectares of rice. Mr. Duoc said that his family's rice field has been sown for nearly a month.

At this time, the rice plants are tillering and are very susceptible to pests and diseases. Therefore, after 3 days of spring and Tet, he immediately visited the fields to check the development of the rice plants and combine thinning and replanting the sparsely sown areas.

According to Mr. Duoc, this year's winter-spring crop has relatively favorable weather, with sufficient water resources, so the land preparation and sowing were timely according to the crop schedule. After sowing, although there were some cold rains, they were short-lived and did not have much impact. Up to now, the rice fields are in the tillering stage, no pests or diseases have appeared, and the rice plants are growing well. "Hopefully this year will have favorable rain and wind so that the crops will be good," Mr. Duoc happily said.

Director of Ngo Xa Dong Cooperative Nguyen Van Dong said that taking advantage of the gradually warming weather, since the third day of the Lunar New Year, many farmers have gone to the fields to visit the rice, weed, prune the sparse fields or fertilize the rice to "buy time".

According to Mr. Dong, the cooperative has a total rice area of over 183 hectares, of which 65 hectares are planted with Ha Phat 3 rice variety under a consumption link with Dong Tam Agricultural Company Limited. This is a rice variety with a short growth period, high tillering ability, concentrated, less affected by low temperatures; good resistance to common pests and diseases, high yield and quality.

“Although it has only been planted for about a month, this new rice variety is already green and thriving, much better than regular rice varieties. This is the joy of our farmers on this first day of the new year,” said Mr. Dong.

According to Vice Chairman of Trieu Phong District People's Committee Vu Thanh Cong, this year's winter-spring crop has been planted in the whole district on over 9,700 hectares of various crops. Of which, rice is over 5,950 hectares, the rest is corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, peanuts and various vegetables. Currently, the rice is in the tillering stage, farmers are focusing on weeding and fertilizing. Compared to previous years, the sowing of the winter-spring crop this year has been quite favorable and on schedule. In the first days of the new year, the weather was dry, so many farmers went to the fields with an excited mood. In addition to rice, other crops in the winter-spring crop have grown well, with no pests or diseases.

Mr. Cong said that not only rice but up to this point, all other crops such as cassava, corn, vegetables... have basically completed planting according to plan. Of which, for rice, the area of high-quality rice accounts for over 80%, with key rice varieties such as: HN6, Khang Dan, HC96, Ha Phat 3, HG1...

In addition, there are 60 hectares of naturally cultivated rice, 82 hectares of VietGAP rice, and more than 100 hectares of rice produced under product consumption linkages. “Up to now, most of the rice fields of the first and second seasons have completed pruning and fertilizing. Trieu Phong district is focusing on instructing farmers after the Tet holiday to continue going to the fields to monitor the growth of crops to have appropriate treatment measures if unfavorable weather occurs. On the other hand, closely monitor pests and diseases such as rice blast and mice that are likely to cause damage to rice plants to promptly prevent them,” Mr. Cong added.

In Hai Lang district, farmers have gathered in the fields to weed and fertilize rice plants. Identifying this as an important crop, Hai Lang district has recently stepped up its direction and propaganda to encourage people to experiment with the variety structure and adhere to the crop calendar.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Lang district, Van Ngoc Tien Duc, said that so far, the whole district has planted nearly 6,900 hectares of rice and about 2,400 hectares of various crops. Before and during the Lunar New Year, the District People's Committee directed specialized units and localities to actively follow the fields to guide farmers on technical measures to cope with weather conditions and monitor the development of pests and diseases in the fields. Currently, the weather is favorable, so the crops are growing well, and no pests or diseases have appeared. Farmers are focusing on caring for, pruning, and preparing the land to plant the remaining crop areas.

According to statistics from the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (DPP), up to now, the whole province has planted about 25,600 hectares of winter-spring rice, reaching 100.4% of the plan; more than 3,000 hectares of corn, reaching 75% of the plan; more than 3,000 hectares of peanuts, reaching over 100% of the plan; more than 9,200 hectares of cassava, reaching 90% of the plan and more than 4,000 hectares of vegetables of all kinds. Recently, the weather has been relatively favorable, creating conditions for crops to grow well. Rice is in the tillering stage, early tea is actively tillering. Currently, farmers are simultaneously going to the fields to take care of, prune, and fertilize rice fields to promote tillering. Head of the Plant Protection Sub-Department Bui Phuoc Trang informed that through field investigation, only a few pests and diseases have appeared on rice plants such as: rats, golden apple snails, soft aphids... On upland crops such as: fall armyworms, cutworms on corn; collar rot disease on peanuts; viral mosaic disease on cassava... but all are at a mild level, not affecting the growth of crops.

However, Mr. Trang also noted that to ensure a successful winter-spring crop, localities and cooperatives need to continue to closely monitor weather developments and pests during the tillering stage of rice such as rice blast, leaf roller, black-striped dwarf, planthoppers of all kinds... to have effective care, cold protection and prevention measures.

Organize rat extermination and golden apple snail extermination. Take advantage of the clear weather to guide farmers in caring for and pruning the tillering rice area to ensure density, early fertilization, balancing NPK according to the correct process, and regulating water properly to help the rice plants grow well from the beginning of the season.
