Speed up water intake for planting the most important rice crop of the year

About 90% of the area has enough water.

From 0:00 on February 8, provinces and cities in the Northern Midlands and Delta region (including Hanoi) entered the second phase of water intake for the 2025 Spring crop. The peak period of drought prevention is expected to last until 24:00 on February 14, 2025.

According to the Department of Irrigation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), water intake is still being carried out according to the schedule. The Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang and Thac Ba hydropower reservoirs have been operating at increased power generation capacity since 2:00 p.m. on February 5, 2025 to raise the water level downstream (about 2.5 days before the scheduled water intake date).

Deputy Head of the Hanoi Department of Irrigation and Disaster Prevention and Control Dao Quang Khai said that with the additional flow from hydroelectric reservoirs, irrigation works have been renovated, repaired, and upgraded to meet the conditions for water supply operation.

In Hanoi, most of the important irrigation works have maintained stable operations over the past several days. Among them are the field stations: Phu Sa, Ap Bac, Ba Giang; Dan Hoai and Thanh Diem pumping stations...

With the proactive and active participation of irrigation enterprises and the local agriculture and rural development sector, up to now, the total production area of the 2025 Spring crop of 11 provinces and cities in the Northern Midlands and Delta region (including Hanoi) has had enough water, reaching about 90% of the plan.

Some localities with high water intake rates in the region include: Thai Binh 100%, Ha Nam 99%, Nam Dinh 98%, Phu Tho 96%, Hung Yen 93%, Ninh Binh 91%, Hai Duong 85%, Hai Phong 81%... In Hanoi alone, the area of rice fields with enough water has now reached about 75% of the plan for the entire Spring crop of 2025.

No water loss

Monitoring data shows that with hydropower plants operating at maximum power generation capacity, the flow on the main river is maintained at a high level. Particularly for the Red River, the average water level is about 1.7 - 1.9m at the Hanoi Hydrological Station (Long Bien Bridge area), so irrigation works continue to have favorable conditions to take water.

Deputy Director of the Department of Irrigation Nguyen Hong Khanh said that the unit is currently coordinating with the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company to direct relevant units to operate at maximum power generation capacity to increase water resources downstream.

As for Vietnam Electricity Group, this unit is still directing relevant units to provide a stable power source, ensuring that localities in the Northern Midlands and Delta regions have enough electricity to operate projects during the water collection period.

To ensure the progress of water supply for the 2025 Spring crop, the Department of Irrigation has issued a document requesting provinces and cities to step up propaganda, mobilization, and guidance for people to carry out early land preparation to retain water in the fields. Strengthen the reinforcement of regional and plot banks, ensuring against water loss for areas that have been supplied with enough water.

The Department of Irrigation also requested that localities with low water-sufficient areas in the region such as Hanoi, Bac Ninh, and Hung Yen urgently review the cultivation areas that are likely to be short of water; install field pumping stations, implement plans to supplement water sources, or change the crop structure to suit water source conditions.

“It is expected that on February 10, 2025, the working group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will inspect the actual water intake for the second phase to serve the spring rice planting at the Bac Hung Hai irrigation system and Hai Duong province. Depending on the progress of water intake in the entire Northern Midlands and Delta region, the time of the second phase can be flexibly adjusted to ensure water saving…” - Deputy Director of the Department of Irrigation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) Nguyen Hong Khanh .
