After a year of low shrimp prices, in the last months of 2024 and early 2025, the raw shrimp market recovered, and farmers in Kien Giang province were excited and had more motivation to continue farming the new crop.
According to many industrial shrimp farming households in Hon Dat, Kien Luong, Giang Thanh districts and Ha Tien city, 2024 is a difficult year for shrimp farmers because the disease situation in farmed shrimp is complicated, and unfavorable weather greatly affects the growth and development of shrimp.
In addition, prices of production goods such as medicine and food have increased, while shrimp prices in the market have remained lower than in the first 9 months of 2024. Many farming households have encountered diseases, low shrimp prices, losses, and no money to invest in new farming. Some households only stock at low density to wait for prices to increase.
In the last months of 2024, the shrimp market began to recover, the demand for raw shrimp from businesses serving exports and the consumer market during the Lunar New Year increased, pushing shrimp prices up. Many households still raising shrimp were very excited because they sold at good prices.
According to some shrimp traders in Kien Luong area, Ha Tien city, white leg shrimp is being purchased by processing factories at the price of 95,000-100,000 VND/kg for 100 shrimp/kg, and 40-50 shrimp/kg for 140,000-145,000 VND/kg.
For oxygenated shrimp serving the Tet market in the Northern provinces and Cambodia, traders buy at a price 10% higher than the purchase price of processing factories, higher than the production cost, so shrimp farmers make a profit.
High-tech shrimp farmers in Van Thanh hamlet, Tho Son commune (Hon Dat district, Kien Giang province) watch over the feed and check the shrimp.
According to the Department of Fisheries of Kien Giang province, in 2024, the whole province will raise 136,340 hectares of brackish water shrimp, reaching 100.47% of the annual plan target. The output of farmed shrimp of all kinds will reach 133,181 tons, an increase of 10.07% over the same period in 2023. The output of farmed shrimp increased because people increased the farming area in the past year.
It is forecasted that in 2025, Vietnam's raw shrimp export situation will have many fluctuations, facing fierce competition from strong shrimp exporting countries such as Ecuador, India, Honduras, affecting domestic shrimp prices. In addition, increasingly erratic weather conditions and shrimp diseases that have not been strictly controlled will greatly affect the brackish water shrimp production situation in 2025 in the province.
To ensure the successful implementation of the 2025 brackish water shrimp crop, Kien Giang province proactively issued an early shrimp release schedule for each region.
The provincial Department of Fisheries strengthens coordination with localities to organize training and provide guidance on safe and effective production techniques; strengthen environmental and disease monitoring and warning; operate irrigation systems to meet people's needs for water for shrimp farming; continue to support people in registering identification codes for brackish water shrimp farming facilities to meet the need for product traceability.
At the same time, farmers are advised to choose quality breeds, guide the multi-stage farming process and release large-sized breeds to limit the risk of disease and damage caused by environmental factors... Encourage localities to establish shrimp farming cooperatives and groups to link production, reduce intermediaries, and save production costs.
