With symptoms of delayed speech, through testing language and motor functions at the screening program, baby TGB was found to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. To help the baby recover from the impaired functions, doctors advised and supported the family to intervene and receive treatment right at the hospital (photo below).
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bich, TGB's grandmother, shared: "I really want to know what level of autism the doctor has and what treatment methods are available so that the family can help the child become aware."
Every year, the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital organizes two free screening sessions to provide early intervention for children with disabilities at all kindergartens in the city. From March 27 to April 2, doctors examined and screened nearly 250 cases for language and motor skills. Of these, about 45 cases showed signs of delayed language development, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and autism.
Every day, the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital receives and treats about 140 children with motor and language development disorders.
Doctor CKI Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh, in charge of the Department of Internal Medicine - Pediatrics, Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital said: "Symptoms in autistic children are characterized by three groups: abnormalities in communication, abnormalities in social interaction, abnormalities in behavior. By observing the child during the interview, we can recognize whether the child has signs of autism or not to give the best advice to the family."
The hospital proactively approaches and applies new treatment methods.
Every day, the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital receives and treats about 140 children with developmental disorders in movement and language. The hospital has proactively approached and applied new treatment methods, such as: Sensory therapy, music, traditional medicine... Recently, a high-pressure oxygen machine has been introduced to support treatment, accelerating the recovery process of listening - speaking skills, gestures, and actions that autistic children are lacking.
Doctor CKII Doan Nam Chien, Deputy Director of the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital added: “Hyperbaric oxygen has wide indications in internal medicine treatment, can be applied to cases such as: patients with stress or patients with long-term insomnia, including the treatment of autistic children. One course of treatment we apply is about 10 days of treatment”.
Using a high-pressure oxygen machine to support treatment will speed up the recovery process of listening, speaking, gestures, and actions that autistic children are lacking.
Along with community screening programs, the Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital strengthens counseling and intervention activities for autistic children at home, and provides training on recognition and intervention for autistic children at school for preschool teachers... Thereby raising community awareness of autism spectrum disorders, helping children have a safe and healthy living and learning environment.
