Why do referees often make mistakes with "weak" teams?

The most prominent refereeing incident in the 9th round of the V-League was assistant Nguyen Thanh Son indirectly denying a valid goal of SL Nghe An in the away match against Cong An Ha Noi (CAHN) at Hang Day Stadium. The flag raised by assistant Thanh Son when Soladio of SL Nghe An received the ball legally, was not offside at all and scored. If not for the injustice in that situation, SL Nghe An would have led CAHN 2-0. However, the final result was SL Nghe An unfairly lost 1-2.

Previously, in round 5 of the V-League at Thien Truong Stadium, Khanh Hoa was robbed of a victory when they were leading 1-0 against Nam Dinh, but in the extra minutes, referee Truong Hong Vu turned a foul by the Nam Dinh striker into a foul by the Khanh Hoa goalkeeper and awarded the home team a penalty.

As a result, Khanh Hoa went from deserving victory to a draw full of resentment without knowing who to cry to.

These are the two most obvious and worst cases in refereeing and both fall into the “weak” team. One from the winning team was denied the chance to increase the score but ended up empty-handed and the other from 3 points to 1 point left to drown in the relegation battle.

According to former Head of the Referee Board Duong Van Hien, in round 9, the disciplinary penalty imposed on assistant Nguyen Thanh Son will be very severe because of his decisive professional mistake that changed the match result in an unfavorable direction for the SL Nghe An team.

Mistakes in refereeing are inevitable, especially in the World Cup, despite modern technology, referees still make mistakes. However, in the V-League, referees' mistakes are often suspected of being dishonest or because of pressure, referees often make mistakes from their thoughts. Here, referees often make mistakes on "weak" teams, making viewers even more uneasy.

Recently, VFF and VPF have been preparing to equip the VAR system for Vietnamese referees and have also recently had training for the VAR referee team. Many people keep saying that with VAR, there will be no more controversy, but remember that VAR is just a support tool and the main point is still the decision of the human, specifically the referee.

The important thing, as many veteran referees have said, is that the referee’s mind must be clear and must ensure that he is not influenced by any pressure. The thing about refereeing in Vietnam is that most referees are very afraid of their superiors and often speculate that this team has this big official, that team is friendly with that big official…

Fierce debate about the 11m penalty in the Hai Phong - Khanh Hoa match

Also in round 9, there was much debate about the penalty that the home team Hai Phong was awarded in relation to the goal that sealed the 2-1 score. In the 67th minute, Mpande dribbled into the penalty area and collided with central defender Minh Huy, and referee Viet Duan pointed to the penalty spot for Khanh Hoa team.

There are many arguments, especially from Khanh Hoa team, that Minh Huy hit the ball so it cannot be a penalty. However, it is important to understand that even though Minh Huy hit the ball, his next move was to clamp Mpande's supporting leg, causing this player to fall within 16.50m, so the penalty awarded to Khanh Hoa team by referee Viet Duan was correct.
