Subsidence of freshwater land in Ca Mau province, causing damage of more than 20 billion VND
According to the reporter's investigation, in the dry season of 2024, in the freshwater area of Ca Mau province, especially Tran Van Thoi district, many cases of land subsidence occurred. This situation was recorded most concentrated in the communes of Tran Hoi, Khanh Hai, Khanh Binh, Khanh Binh Tay, Khanh Binh Tay Bac.

Land subsidence has damaged many roads, affecting people's lives and production.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Duong Van An in Hamlet 1, Khanh Binh Tay Bac Commune said that next to the concrete road in front of his house, there was a subsidence and landslide of more than 200 meters.
"The landslide is located next to the concrete road. Although the road has not cracked, the soil underneath has collapsed to the edge of the canal, creating a very dangerous deep hole. Therefore, I created a path inside so that people can drive with peace of mind," said Mr. An.
Like Mr. An, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lieu in Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune planted a tree to warn people to avoid moving along the edge of the road that is sinking.
Ms. Lieu led the reporter to the subsidence site, and said that the subsidence site was about 20 meters long and nearly 6 meters wide, collapsing into the canal. Fortunately, no one was driving by at the time.

According to the People's Committee of Tran Van Thoi district, up to now, 132 roads along the canal in the district have suffered from subsidence and landslides, with a total length of 15,800m at 601 points, with estimated damage of more than 20 billion VND.
One of the causes of local land subsidence is that this year's dry season ended early, and severe drought caused water to drain quickly.
In addition, there is also the cause of people taking advantage of pumping water into the fields for production, increasing the drying of rivers and canals. This causes a large difference in height between the riverside road surface and the water level below, leading to subsidence and landslides.
Currently, local authorities are focusing on reducing the traffic load on the West Sea Dike from 8 tons to 5 tons. For locations at risk of subsidence, solutions are also being implemented such as traffic diversion, relocation of houses or structures, pruning of tree branches to reduce the load, etc.
Mr. Do Minh Dien - Deputy Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province) said that in terms of long-term solutions, it is necessary to continue investing in dam systems and pumping stations to proactively regulate water in the freshwater area. "This is also one of the solutions to minimize the loss of counter-pressure when the water level in the canal drops too low" - Mr. Dien said.
Faced with the above situation, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province Huynh Quoc Viet signed a decision to declare a level 2 natural disaster emergency in Tran Van Thoi and U Minh districts (mainly lack of water for production and daily life), to focus on solutions, resources and human resources to respond to landslides and drought.
Subsidence everywhere in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone (Kien Giang), causing damage of over 83 billion VND
This year's dry season, specifically from the beginning of March until now, in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone, U Minh Thuong district, Kien Giang province, there have been 310 landslides and subsidence points with a total length of over 7,500m of roads and caused 26 houses to collapse, with an estimated total loss of over 83 billion VND.

The above situation is continuing and causing a lot of property damage. In particular, 67 houses are at high risk of landslides and collapse in the coming time, especially when the first heavy rains of the season appear.
Mr. Duong Quoc Khoi - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of U Minh Thuong district said that landslides and subsidence incidents occurred most in An Minh Bac commune and Minh Thuan commune.
Regarding the cause, according to Mr. Khoi, from early March until now, the outer dyke canals and canals in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone have been running low on water, while the demand for irrigation pumping from the canal system to reserve for production and people's daily life is very high, causing the current water surface to be about 5m from the road surface. In the prolonged hot weather conditions, it has caused landslides and subsidence of traffic roads.
In addition, there are also cases where the bottom of some canals in the area is quite deep (due to previous dredging for many different purposes) along with weak ground causing landslides, subsidence, and landslides.
Currently, the functional sectors of An Minh Bac and Minh Thuan communes are mobilizing forces to temporarily repair rural roads that have collapsed or eroded or to open temporary roads for people to travel and transport goods. Particularly for houses that have collapsed or eroded, support is provided to move belongings to a safe place, build temporary houses, etc.
At the same time, the U Minh Thuong authorities identified areas at risk of subsidence and landslides to string ropes, draw lines, and install signs and signal lights to warn people not to approach.
For serious landslide locations on provincial road 965, the Department of Transport of Kien Giang province has been carrying out repairs, temporary traffic diversion, limiting truck loads, and installing signs prohibiting trucks weighing over 3.5 tons from circulating.

Regarding the above situation, Mr. Lam Minh Thanh - Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee signed a decision to announce an emergency situation regarding landslides and land subsidence due to drought in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone (U Minh Thuong district).
The head of the Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee also assigned relevant departments, branches and units to coordinate and deploy emergency solutions to overcome the consequences. At the same time, monitor the latest developments to provide information to people to grasp the situation in dangerous areas, minimizing damage.
