The Quy Nhon channel upgrade project for fully loaded ships of up to 50,000 DWT will start construction in the first quarter of 2025.

According to the Maritime Project Management Board, the investment project to build and upgrade Quy Nhon channel for 50,000 DWT ships will start construction in March 2025 with the package "Dredging, transporting dredged materials for dumping and relocating signal buoys".

The project will be constructed within 300 days, aiming to invest in renovating the Quy Nhon maritime channel and turning basin for ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT (full load) or larger (ensuring maritime safety conditions) to meet the region's cargo transit needs.

The Quy Nhon waterway upgrade project can help regional seaports accommodate ships of up to 50,000 DWT (full load) or larger, reducing the load and increasing the efficiency of maritime operations in the area.

The investment project to build and upgrade Quy Nhon channel for 50,000 DWT ships has a total investment of 693.2 billion VND, mobilized from the State budget in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2021-2025.

The scope of the project includes renovating and upgrading a channel with a length of about 7.16km from buoy No. 0 to the turning basin of wharf No. 1, with a channel width of 140m and a channel bottom elevation of -13m (nautical chart); upgrading the existing turning basin in front of wharf No. 1 into a shared turning basin with a diameter of 400m; widening the curved channel from 220-235m; moving the buoy signaling system to match the upgraded channel.

The estimated dredging volume at the Quy Nhon channel renovation and upgrade project for 50,000 DWT ships is about 4.1 million m3.

The Ministry of Transport assigns the Maritime Project Management Board to be responsible for organizing the survey, design, preparation, examination, appraisal, and approval of construction drawing design documents according to regulations; making a plan and overall and detailed schedule to implement the project, complying with regulations, in accordance with the capital plan granted by the competent authority.

The Maritime Project Management Board is also responsible for strictly managing construction investment costs, ensuring that they do not exceed the total approved project investment.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Maritime Administration, in the 5-year period from 2019-2023, the number of ships with larger tonnage than announced entering and leaving Quy Nhon seaport has increased, from 204 ships in 2019 to 217 ships in 2023.

The volume of goods through Quy Nhon seaport also tends to increase. In 2019, the volume of goods through Quy Nhon seaport reached more than 8.8 million tons, and by 2023, the volume increased to more than 10 million tons. In 2024, the volume of goods through Quy Nhon seaport reached more than 12.3 million tons.

In the Project "Research on improving the exploitation capacity of public maritime infrastructure and existing port infrastructure" of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Quy Nhon maritime channel has not been maintained or dredged for a long time.

At the same time, dredging projects to maintain water areas in front of the port in the area have not been dredged for many years to ensure design depth.

Meanwhile, if dredged and upgraded, Quy Nhon Port will be able to receive ships with a capacity of up to 70,000 DWT with reduced load to load cargo.
