'Throwing stones to probe the way' to resolve conflicts

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/02/2025

US President Donald Trump has recently repeatedly raised scenarios related to the Middle East and Ukraine, moves that are believed to be mostly aimed at testing the reactions of all parties.

From the shocking idea of Gaza

After President Trump announced on February 4 that the US would take over the Gaza Strip and did not rule out sending troops there, many senior US officials later explained this shocking idea. AFP quoted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 5 as saying that President Trump's idea was not "hostile" and only wanted the Palestinians to temporarily leave while Gaza was rebuilt.

On the same day, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt emphasized: "President Trump has been very clear that the United States needs to participate in this reconstruction effort to ensure stability in the region for everyone. That does not mean deploying troops on the ground in Gaza, nor does it mean that American taxpayers will fund this effort."

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington is ready to "consider all possible options" regarding Gaza, noting that the US will not send troops to the area unless absolutely necessary.

Despite explanations from US officials, Mr. Trump's statement continued to face fierce reactions. Accordingly, representatives of Russia, China and Germany spoke out to reject the US plan to take over Gaza, while affirming that a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue is the only way to resolve the Middle East conflict.

Saudi Arabia, a major regional power, flatly rejected Mr Trump’s proposal. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) yesterday expressed concern over Mr Trump’s plan, saying any forced relocation or deportation of people from Gaza would violate international law.

Last night, Mr. Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social that Gaza would be handed over to the US by Israel after the war ended, but did not specify on what basis.

Towards a Peaceful Solution in Ukraine

According to Bloomberg on February 5, citing Mr. Keith Kellogg, special envoy for Ukraine and Russia chosen by Mr. Trump, the US is about to announce a plan to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the Munich Security Conference scheduled to take place from February 14 to 16 in Germany. Mr. Trump's plan for peace in Ukraine is said to include the possibility of freezing the conflict and leaving Russian-controlled territories "in limbo" along with ensuring security for Ukraine.

Russia welcomes a Trump stance, sends new message

Trump and his team are now focusing on pressure and peace talks with both Russia and Ukraine. Accordingly, President Trump threatened Russia with high tariffs and additional sanctions if Moscow and Kyiv do not reach a peace agreement soon. Trump is maintaining old military aid to Ukraine to increase losses for Russia, but has not discussed any new aid package for now, Reuters quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 5.

In addition, Mr. Trump’s team is also in contact with Russian and Ukrainian officials. In a video address on February 5, President Zelensky said that the Ukrainian side has had extensive contacts with the US side in recent days about peace negotiations. On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that there were contacts between individual departments of Russia and the US, according to The New York Times .

Israel prepares plan for "voluntary migration" in Gaza

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military on February 6 to prepare a plan to allow "voluntary departure of Gaza residents" after President Trump floated the idea of taking over the strip. Katz said Spain, Ireland, Norway and other countries have a legal obligation to take in displaced Gazans. Channel 12 reported that Katz's plan would include evacuation options by land, sea and air. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares quickly rejected Katz's statement, according to RNE. There was no immediate response from Ireland or Norway.
