This year, the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event is more notable than ever, because many in the industry consider the Galaxy S24 to be among the first batch of devices that want to take full advantage of artificial intelligence (AI).

The venue is in San Jose, USA, very close to the heart of the AI boom. In addition, this year the Galaxy S24 launch date is earlier than usual. In previous years, Samsung usually announced the new Galaxy in February.

The South Korean electronics giant has been tight-lipped about what the new phone can do, but speculation suggests the company is going all-in on AI. Samsung has just revealed that the device will include real-time call translation.

In theory, this means an American could call a Brazilian and both would understand what the other was saying directly, without the need for a third-party app or data processing through a remote server.

Samsung is reportedly working with multiple partners to add AI features to its devices. At CES 2024, the company teamed up with Marvel Studios for a marketing campaign centered on the Las Vegas Sphere.

There are other reasons for the heat of Unpacked 2024. Global smartphone sales are on the decline as users are less likely to upgrade. Advances in AI could change the perception that the smartphone era has stalled and increase buyer interest.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is also planning to announce its own AI services at its WWDC 2024 developer conference. How AI will change the experience of using a phone remains to be seen.

Research firm Counterpoint estimates that more than a billion AI-enabled smartphones will be shipped by the end of 2027. This week's Unpacked 2024 event will be Samsung's early chance to seize the opportunity.
