Superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were both named in the list of 23 FIFA FIFPro players of the year 2023, announced on January 3.
The two veterans are part of a list of seven attackers, alongside Karim Benzema, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior. In addition, FIFA and FIFPro have selected three goalkeepers, six defenders and seven midfielders.
List of 23 typical players in 2023, according to FIFPro.
FIFPro is the world professional footballers' association, founded in 1965, with 65,000 members from 66 football federations. FIFPro has been working with FIFA to select the best XI each year since 2005. The list of nominees consisted of 23 players, before being narrowed down to 11. The nominees were chosen by more than 25,000 professional footballers from FIFA and FIFPro, based on the player's performance from 19/12/2022 (after the World Cup) to 20/8/2023.
Of the 23 players on the list, only Ronaldo will not be playing for a European club in 2023, as he plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. However, the Portuguese captain is the top scorer in 2023, with 54 goals, among players currently playing for a club in the national championship.
In addition, the list also includes two players who are not currently on the payroll of a European club, Messi and Benzema. Messi left PSG to play for Inter Miami in the US from July 2023, while Benzema also went to the Saudi League to play for Al Ittihad.
Man City dominate the list, with eight representatives, not counting midfielder Ilkay Gundogan who has moved to Barca. Inter reached the Champions League final last year and won the Coppa Italia, but have no representatives. Napoli won Serie A, but are also not nominated. The list also lacks players who can play left-back. There are five first-time nominees, namely Gundogan, Eder Militao, Rodri, John Stones and Vinicius.
From the above list, FIFA and FIFPro will select 11 players for the best squad, including one goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. The remaining spot in the squad will be reserved for the player with the most votes who has not yet been in the squad. The best 11 players will be announced on January 15.
Messi holds the record for 16 FIFPro World XIs, consecutively since 2007. Ronaldo has been named 15 times, as he missed out in 2022. In addition, only one player has appeared in the squad more than 10 times, Sergio Ramos with 11 times.
