Ukraine's military admitted that Russian forces entered the outskirts of the eastern city of Toretsk on October 7, less than a week after Moscow took control of the town of Vuhledar.

Anastasiia Bobovnikova, spokeswoman for the Luhansk tactical group, told Ukrainian state television: "The situation is very unstable. Fighting is taking place at all the gates of the city. Russian troops have also entered the eastern suburbs of Toretsk."
The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet made any comments, but Moscow announced on October 7 that its forces had caused damage to Ukrainian personnel and equipment near several settlements in the region.
Moscow's military move, as well as its capture of Vuhledar last week, reflects Russia's superiority in forces and equipment, especially as Ukraine calls on its Western allies for more weapons support.
As early as August 2024, Russian forces advanced towards Toretsk and used more and more powerful guided bombs, taking control of surrounding villages one by one, narrowing the siege around this strategic city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered his generals to “do everything possible” to slow Moscow’s advance along the front line.
Toretsk (known as Dzerzhinsk until 2016) is a hilly city in the Donetsk region. When the Ukrainian civil war broke out in 2014, it was located right on the border between Kiev-controlled areas and pro-Russian militias. As a result, Toretsk has been the scene of fighting for the past 10 years and plays an important role in Ukraine's defense system.
For Moscow, holding the area would bring President Vladimir Putin closer to his goal of controlling the Donbass region, which was the industrial capital of the Eastern European country before the outbreak of war.
According to Ukrainian military analysts, the fall of Toretsk allowed Moscow to cut off key supply routes between Kiev's rear and front lines, including the main Pokrovsk-Kostyantynivka line.
Earlier, in a social media post on October 7, Ukraine announced that its military had attacked a large oil depot on the Crimean peninsula. In response, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had shot down 12 Ukrainian drones that attacked the peninsula.
Moscow also attacked a Kiev grain ship with a ballistic missile on October 7, killing one person and injuring five others.
