Here, more than 200 Quang Duc ceramic artifacts are displayed in an elegant space. Besides, there are some artifacts of Champa culture, Vietnamese ceramics, some unique artifacts and very special historical values, related to the land and people of Phu Yen as well as the process of expanding the territory to the South of our ancestors.
A unique ceramic line
According to antiquities researcher Tran Thanh Hung, Head of the UNESCO Club for Research and Conservation of Phu Yen Antiquities, Quang Duc pottery is a continuation of the famous Go Sanh pottery line (Binh Dinh) under the Vijaya Champa dynasty, in the land of Binh Dinh today. After this pottery line ended its golden age, at the end of the 16th century, a Nguyen family from Binh Dinh brought the pottery making craft to the foot of A Man mountain (in Quang Duc village, An Thach commune, Tuy An district today) to establish a village and make pottery.
Influenced by the Champa pottery line, but on this new land, where there is a source of very good green clay and yellow clay in An Dinh, there is firewood for firing pottery, there is O Loan blood cockles contributing to making the pottery have many unique colors, creating an unmistakable identity..., the artisan has created a unique pottery line - Quang Duc pottery.
As a son of Tuy An, Quang Duc pottery collector Tran Thanh Hung has a lot of “fate” with this type of pottery. In 1992, during a trip to the Western region of Phu Yen, he discovered a wine jar with a strange glaze color, the jar’s body was marked with many shell marks. After asking, he learned that the village elder here bought it from Quang Duc pottery village. Since then, he has spent a lot of time and effort collecting and learning about this type of pottery.
According to the researcher of antiquities Tran Thanh Hung: The typical Quang Duc ceramic line is glazed ceramic. Most glazed ceramic products are imprinted with seashells. In the world, the use of seashells and scallop shells to increase the temperature of the kiln has appeared since the 9th century in Italy, but Quang Duc ceramics is a unique coincidence. The late artisan Nguyen Thinh, one of the last artisans who knew the technique of making Quang Duc glazed ceramics, recounted: When firing ceramics, lime was combined with burning from clams, but at that time, there were countless blood clams in O Loan, no one waited to eat the clams before firing the shells. Some artisans put live clams between the ceramic embryo (unfired ceramic) and the firing bag. During the firing process, the blood of the clams flowed out onto the ceramic surface. The impact of fire, along with the phenomenon of fire transformation and regeneration during the firing process, created for Quang Duc ceramics many unique glaze colors, no two are alike...
