Accordingly, the warning level was raised to level 2 in a 5-level warning system, meaning that the current shallow underground magma development could "lead to steam eruptions, which could then lead to dangerous magma eruptions."

The institute has recently been monitoring an increase in rockfall from the crater, a sign of increased seismic activity. Since April 1, the institute has recorded 318 rockfalls and 26 volcanic tremors.

The institute advised residents in Albay province to stay away from the danger zone within a 6km radius of the volcano and to be on the lookout for explosions, rockfalls and landslides. It also urged civil aviation authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying near the summit of Mount Mayon because a sudden eruption could pose a flight hazard.

Mayon Volcano, with its unique cone shape, is a popular tourist destination. It is the most active volcano in the Philippines, having erupted more than 50 times in the past 400 years.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur.
