(CLO) The administration of US President-elect Donald Trump is about to carry out a campaign to deport illegal immigrants en masse immediately after his inauguration on January 20.
A “large-scale immigration sweep” is expected to begin in Chicago on the morning of January 21 and last all week, according to the report. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency may deploy between 100 and 200 officers in Chicago to carry out the operation.
The operations will focus on illegal immigrants, last throughout the week, and extend to cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Denver.

Tom Homan, the former acting director of ICE and now a top border official in the Trump administration, asserted that the raids were part of an effort to fulfill Trump’s campaign pledge.
He stressed that the initial focus is on those who pose a threat to public safety, but anyone who is in the country illegally can be targeted. “ICE will enforce immigration laws without apology,” he added.
“Sanctuary” areas run by Democratic-led cities where local governments refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities will also be pressured to support deportation operations.
Chicago, one of the cities that has declared itself a “sanctuary” for migrants, has said it will not share information with ICE. Don Terry, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, said the force would not interfere with the federal agency’s mission, but would not assist it either.
Immigration was a key part of Mr Trump's campaign, with his administration pledging to launch the largest domestic deportation campaign in US history immediately after his inauguration.
The operation marks a return to a controversial policy implemented during Mr Trump's first term, with a focus on securing the border and strengthening national security.
