Previously, after becoming president-elect in November 2016, Mr. Trump affirmed that he would not accept a salary of $400,000/year but would only receive a symbolic $1/year to comply with the law.

By law, the US President currently has a salary of $400,000/year, paid monthly, along with a $50,000/year allowance.

During his first term as president, Trump donated his salary to various government agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Park Service, according to the Tampa Free Press .

Also according to the Tampa Free Press , George Washington initially refused to accept a salary when he became the first president of the United States in 1789, but eventually accepted to ensure that future leaders could be paid for their efforts, regardless of their personal wealth.

Mr. Trump is one of the few US presidents in modern history to refuse to accept a presidential salary, including Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy, who both donated their salaries to charity, according to the Tampa Free Press .
