The New York Times, citing four anonymous sources, reported that Manhattan district prosecutors in New York state have signaled that they may pursue criminal charges against former President Donald Trump for paying hush money to former porn star Stormy Daniels.

The former president has been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury in Manhattan to testify to his previous statements. The appearance before the grand jury also means that an indictment is imminent for Mr. Trump.

Susan Necheles, Mr Trump's personal lawyer, later confirmed the summons to appear before the grand jury.

"My client has been invited to appear before the grand jury like all other people under investigation," Ms. Necheles explained.

If prosecuted, the case would have a huge impact on Mr. Trump's re-election efforts in 2024.

Stormy Daniels, born Stephanie Clifford, claims to have had sex with Mr Trump in Nevada in 2006, when Mr Trump was married to Melania.

The former president denies the allegations, but in 2016, Mr Trump's longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels $130,000 to "buy her silence".

Mr Cohen later pleaded guilty to federal campaign finance violations related to the hush money, saying he was only working “at the direction” of Mr Trump.
