"I know I'm not as young. I don't walk as well as I used to. I don't walk as well as I used to. I don't debate as well as I used to," President Biden said at a campaign rally on June 28.
"But I know what I need to know. I know how to tell the truth, I know right from wrong, and I know how to do this job. Like millions of other Americans, I know, when you fall down, you get back up," Biden declared.
President Biden believes he can still do the job of being America's leader.
"I promise you, as Joe Biden, I would not run again if I didn't believe with all my heart and soul that I could do this job. Because, frankly, the stakes are too high," Biden stressed.
On the evening of June 27 local time, Mr. Joe Biden and Mr. Donald Trump, the two leading presidential candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties of the United States, participated in the first live debate of the 2024 US presidential election season.
The debate took place earlier than usual, 1-2 months before the party convention officially nominates candidates and 4 months before election day.
In this 90-minute debate, former President Trump was considered to have performed better than President Joe Biden.
A CNN snap poll released after the debate found that 67% of registered voters who watched the event said Trump outperformed Biden in the debate.
Mr Biden appeared to have difficulty refuting Mr Trump and was also less assertive on debate issues such as abortion rights, a topic that is considered an advantage for the Democratic Party.
This has raised concerns within Mr. Biden’s Democratic Party. Some have suggested that Mr. Biden should withdraw from the race and the Democratic Party should find a replacement candidate.
However, Mr. Biden's campaign team insists that he will not drop out. President Biden also announced that he will continue to participate in the race despite admitting that the debate did not meet expectations.
Asked by Politico if Biden would withdraw amid the backlash, a Biden campaign aide said “of course not.” Another member of the president’s team also insisted that Biden was “the only person who has ever beaten Donald Trump and he will do it again.”
Biden campaign spokesman Seth Schuster told The Hill that President Biden has no intention of dropping out of the race for the White House.
For his part, Mr. Biden dismissed concerns about his performance. "I think we did a great job," he stressed, also mentioning that the New York Times counted Mr. Trump lying 26 times during the debate.
Mr. Biden also said he had a sore throat during the debate. He also scheduled a "rematch" with Mr. Trump in the second debate in September.
