Boldly applying scientific and technical advances to livestock farming, Mr. Nguyen Song Da, Nam Binh commune (Kien Xuong, Thai Binh) has successfully developed a model of raising loach cartilage - an aquatic species that is likened to water ginseng because of its nutritional value.
Visiting the cartilaginous loach farming model of Mr. Nguyen Song Da's family, Nam Binh commune (Kien Xuong, Thai Binh) at the time of harvesting and selling to traders, everyone was very impressed to see the cartilaginous loach with quite large size and beautiful yellow color.
Mr. Da excitedly shared: This is the first batch of loach cartilage to be sold in 2025 with a weight of about 25 loach/kg. By selling about 600 kg of loach cartilage, I have an income of 40 million VND.
According to Mr. Da, in 2010, after learning information through newspapers and the internet, he learned about the profession of raising loach in Nam Dinh. Realizing the potential for development, he went sightseeing, learned from experience and bought 50,000 loach seeds for experimental breeding. Thanks to the available converted land area of 5,000m2, he invested in renovating the pond to implement breeding. During the breeding process, Mr. Da installed an automatic feeding machine to reduce time and labor.
Mr. Nguyen Song Da, Nam Binh commune (Kien Xuong, Thai Binh) invested in building a tarpaulin tank to raise loaches.
Dare to think, dare to do, be diligent in researching and learning from experience, so right from the first crop, his family sold 1 ton of loach to traders for 65 million VND, much higher than traditional fish farming.
In early 2024, Mr. Da invested 50 million VND to build a tarpaulin tank on the shore and a roof to raise loach with high density. He said: Loach is not too difficult to raise, does not require high technology. The most important factor in the raising process is to pay attention to water treatment to prevent diseases and choose quality breeds. The advantage of loach is that it gains weight quickly and has high resistance, with few diseases. Due to its floating and gluttonous nature, the process of raising loach is not too hard. Therefore, I can take advantage of leftover food combined with industrial animal feed.
Along with that, loach cartilage has a short breeding cycle, can be harvested after only 3 months. With delicious and nutritious meat quality, the selling price is high, the consumption market is favorable.
Traders directly come to buy loach cartilage from Mr. Nguyen Song Da's family, Nam Binh commune (Kien Xuong, Thai Binh).
“I am currently raising loach in traditional ponds, floating ponds and 2 tarpaulin tanks of nearly 3,000 square meters. Each year I raise 2 crops of loach, earning about 100 million VND. It is expected that in 2025 I will continue to research to raise frogs in combination with loach to increase economic value on the same area,” Mr. Da added.
Ms. Vu Thi Hong Diep, President of the Farmers' Association of Nam Binh Commune, said: The model of raising loach of member Nguyen Song Da is an aquaculture economic model that brings high economic efficiency. However, to be successful with this model, households need to have a suitable investment plan and learn the techniques of raising and caring for them thoroughly and systematically.
In the coming time, the Commune Farmers' Association will accompany and create all conditions for Mr. Da to expand production. In addition, it will step up propaganda and mobilize members to innovate their thinking and working methods, boldly introduce livestock with high productivity, quality and economic efficiency into breeding; at the same time, continue to support capital and transfer science and technology for households to implement the model, contributing to improving family economy.
In Oriental medicine, loach is considered "water ginseng" because it has many effects of nourishing the body and enhancing physiology. Loach contains a lot of lysine - an essential component in sperm formation. Therefore, eating loach not only helps increase the quantity but also the quality of sperm.
In addition, loach contains a lot of calcium. According to the Vietnamese food composition table, 100g of loach provides 109mg of calcium along with protein and other nutrients, the calcium content is 6 times higher than carp and about 10 times higher than squid, helping to prevent rickets in children and strengthen bones in the elderly.
