Nio introduces electric car battery that can run 1,000km

Semi-solid-state batteries were once announced by Nio to be introduced to users in 2022. However, after nearly two years of waiting, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer will finally launch this type of battery on June 1.

At 150 kWh, it will be the largest battery pack produced in China and has the highest energy density. The product will initially be available for lease, with no outright purchase option.

Nio had said the semi-solid-state battery would be delivered in 2022, but it wasn't until late 2023 that battery testing was completed.

When Nio CEO William Li conducted an endurance test in December 2023 on the Nio ET7, the car traveled 1,044km during a 14-hour drive at an average speed of 83.9km/h.

Thanks to Nio’s battery-swapping technology, all Nio owners can benefit from a new battery. The rental fee depends on the capacity of the battery pack the car is sold for.

Nio's semi-solid-state battery has a capacity of up to 150kWh.

Cars equipped with 70-75kWh batteries will have to pay an additional 150 yuan ($21) per day to use the 150kWh battery.

For cars with a 100kWh or larger battery rental package, the price drops to 100 yuan ($14) a day. What’s special is that despite having a larger battery capacity of up to 150kWh, the semi-solid-state battery pack is the same size as all of Nio’s other batteries.

According to Nio, the 150kWh battery is the world's first flexible cell-to-pack (CTP) battery with no thermal runaway. The battery is semi-solid and has an energy density of up to 360Wh/kg, which is the highest energy density of any battery currently mass-produced in China.

Previously, there were claims that the price of the 150kWh package is extremely expensive, equal to a Nio ET5 car. This is said to be the reason why the 150kWh package is not purchased by many customers.

Semi-solid-state batteries give Nio models a range of around 1,000km (CLTC standard), and battery leasing means those taking long trips can rent batteries for a few days.
