Traditional craft villages of people in the Southern region

Việt NamViệt Nam26/07/2024

Through the ups and downs of history, with the hard work of preserving and building, the previous generations of fathers and grandfathers paved the way, reclaimed land and established a career, leaving their descendants today with rice fields, gardens, prosperous villages, cultural and historical relics... and traditional craft villages with many characteristics of the Southern Delta.

In addition to agricultural, forestry and fishery production, many craft villages have long been established in the southeastern region. Craft villages for making fish sauce, rice paper, vermicelli, silkworms, brocade weaving, Cham pottery, salt making, seafood processing, shipbuilding and net making for fishermen at sea... are traditional craft villages that create jobs and stable income for the people.

Vietnam.vn would like to introduce to you the traditional craft villages of the Southern region through the photo series "Traditional craft villages of the Southern people" by author Le Minh Quat. The photo series was submitted by the author to the Photo and Video Contest Happy Vietnam - Happy Vietnam, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Bau Truc pottery village is also one of the oldest pottery villages in Southeast Asia that still exists today. The craft village is famous for its terracotta handicrafts imbued with Cham cultural identity. This is one of the places in Ninh Thuan that has always been an attractive destination for many tourists in recent years. While these places have applied many technologies to production, using turntables to mold products, using glaze for decoration or using firing technology in electric and gas kilns... Bau Truc potters still maintain the way of making pottery that their ancestors have done for nearly a thousand years. The products are created with a unique technique, which people often call by the very rustic name "hand-made, rotated with the butt". The potter walks backwards, his hands "catch" each clump of clay. The inside hand presses, the outside hand rubs, transforming the inanimate, lifeless blocks of clay into unique, original ceramic products imbued with Cham culture. The firing method is still done outdoors with firewood, straw, rice husks...
