According to the Encyclopedia Britannica , most of Lesotho (full name: Kingdom of Lesotho) is mountainous and highland, completely surrounded by South Africa. The lowest point of the country is 1,400m high.
Due to its geographical location, Lesotho has a cooler climate than most other places at the same latitude. Snow covers the high mountains from May to September, and in many places it snows all year round.
Lesotho receives a relatively large amount of annual rainfall. Thanks to this, the country does not lack water like many other places. Besides diamonds, water is Lesotho's biggest resource, so it is called "white gold" by the locals.
Lesotho is also known as one of the places with the "world's scariest" airport runways. Accordingly, Matekane Airport in Sibi Sibi has a short runway that extends to the edge of a 500m high cliff and has steep slopes at both ends.
Business Insider once described moving on this runway as "basically like when a bird is pushed out of the nest to learn to fly."
Despite its small size of 30,000 square kilometres, Lesotho boasts a number of natural and cultural wonders. Visitors to Lesotho cannot miss seeing the large, beautiful waterfalls. Among them, the Maletsunyane Falls in Semonkong, which plunges 196 metres down a gorge, is a highlight.
Visitors can hike seemingly endless trails through the wetlands of Bokong Nature Reserve or the grasslands of Sehlabathebe National Park, the largest park in Lesotho.
As the only country in Africa with year-round snow, it is no surprise that Lesotho is home to Africa's highest ski resort - Afriski. Sitting at 3,222m above sea level, Afriski can accommodate around 320 people and offers a ski slope that is up to 1km long.
During the summer months, it offers a variety of activities, from mountain biking, guided Enduro motorbike rides, paintball, hiking, trail running,...
Notably, Lesotho is home to the highest pub in Africa at 2,874m above sea level. It is located right on the border with South Africa and is the end point of the Sani Pass.
