Free swimming pools for kids in summer

Recently, some individuals in the province have invested in building artificial swimming ponds that are open for free to children during the summer. This is a practical and meaningful work to create a useful playground and equip children with skills to prevent drowning accidents.

These days, the artificial swimming pond of Ms. Vu Mai Hue's family in Dang Xa village, Cuong Chinh commune (Tien Lu) has become a destination for many children and parents in the village. Ms. Hue said: This swimming pond was built by my family in 2021 with the initial purpose of serving the needs of my children and the children in the neighborhood. But when information about consecutive drowning accidents was posted, my husband and I decided to open it for free to welcome all children who want to come and play and learn to swim. To ensure the safety of the children, I always ask parents to come along to supervise their children.

The swimming pond has an area of 150m2, and Ms. Hue uses clean water to wash it regularly. Every afternoon, 10-20 children come here to play and learn to swim. While happily playing in the cool water, Tran An Khang in Dang Xa village said: "Every afternoon, my father takes me here to learn to swim. I am very happy". Mr. Tran Van Ka, Khang's parent, shared: Seeing my child express his desire to learn to swim, but the central swimming pool is far from home, so the family has not had the conditions to take him there regularly. When Ms. Hue opened the family swimming pond for free, I took my child to play. There are always adults supervising here, so I feel very secure.

Currently, in Cuong Chinh commune, there are 2 individuals who have invested in building swimming ponds and opened them for free for children. Comrade Vu Thanh Ba, Vice Chairman of Cuong Chinh Commune People's Committee, commented: This is a meaningful and useful work, creating more useful and healthy playgrounds for children during the summer. In order for these swimming ponds to operate safely, the locality regularly reminds individuals to only open the ponds to welcome children when the weather is good, to avoid heat shock affecting their health, and to assign adults to supervise children when they play and practice. Along with that, the locality has promoted communication and propaganda on injury prevention, child protection and care; focused on investing in consolidating facilities and equipment at existing playgrounds to organize activities for children to play safely during the summer vacation...

The swimming pond of Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Secretary of the Youth Union of Phan Lam village, Dao Duong commune (An Thi) attracts many children and people to practice.

With the aim of creating conditions for local children to have a safe and clean place to learn to swim, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Secretary of the Youth Union of Phan Lam village, Dao Duong commune (An Thi) has built a swimming pond to serve children in the commune for free. The swimming pond has an area of 120m2, located in the family's yard, was built in 2019 and has been maintained free of charge to serve children since then.

On hot summer afternoons, Mr. Tuan Anh's swimming pond becomes an ideal playground for children. On average, 40-60 people come to swim every day. Children who do not know how to swim are carefully accompanied by their parents. Ms. Dang Thi Hue (Phan Lam village), who brought her child to practice swimming, shared: This is a very good model, I feel secure when bringing my children here. Swimming ponds like this will help reduce the risk of children drowning.

The Secretary of the Youth Union of Phan Lam village shared: Some parents who brought their children to play and learn to swim offered to send me some money, but I refused. Seeing the children happily swimming in the middle of summer like this makes me happy.

To ensure the safety of children when they come to play, the swimming pool is always staffed and managed, Mr. Tuan Anh also directly teaches swimming to many children, equipping them with basic skills to prevent drowning... Comrade Dang Thi Huyen, Secretary of the Youth Union of Dao Duong commune, said: The free swimming pool model of Comrade Nguyen Tuan Anh is not only a healthy, useful, and safe place for local youth to play every summer, but also contributes to raising awareness for all people about building playgrounds for children. Thereby, training skills, ensuring the safety of children's lives in the face of the current alarming drowning situation.

Summer is the time when children’s swimming needs increase. Therefore, free swimming pond models and free swimming classes like those of Ms. Hue and Mr. Tuan Anh need to be widely replicated by all levels, sectors and localities.
