On the day of the God of Wealth on the 10th day of the first lunar month, families always prepare a full offering tray with pork, boiled eggs, shrimp, crab, sticky rice, fruits, and candy to pray for wealth and luck. Many restaurants and catering units on this occasion have launched elaborately prepared offering trays with diverse prices.
To prepare offerings for customers on the God of Wealth's day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang (Ecopark urban area, Van Giang, Hung Yen) and 4 employees had to wake up very early at 2am this morning.
However, Ms. Hang can only prepare about 30 orders and deliver them within the area near where she lives.
Ms. Hang said she had to turn down many customers, especially those in the Hanoi area, because she did not have enough people to prepare and faced difficulties in transporting the offerings over long distances. “I choose fresh ingredients for all offerings, and the sticky rice and cakes are all handmade, so I only dare to accept a certain number of orders,” Ms. Hang said.
For orders in urban areas, customers must place orders many days in advance. Immediately after completion, she will send staff to deliver by electric car to ensure that the offering tray is not shifted and remains fresh.
According to Ms. Hang, the prices of the offering trays are very diverse, from 500,000 VND and up. “The most expensive tray costs nearly 1.4 million VND, including sticky rice with gac fruit, gold bar sticky rice, eggs, crab, lobster and roast meat. There are also trays with cheaper prices from 500,000 to 800,000 VND with tiger prawns, crabs, eggs...
The price of each tray varies depending on the quantity and weight of the offerings. In addition, I also prepare simple offerings with only roasted meat, sticky rice or gold bars made from green bean flour, sticky rice, areca flower sweet soup…”, Ms. Hang said.
With many years of experience in food service, Ms. Hang has noticed that in the past 4-5 years, people in the North have become increasingly interested in the God of Wealth's day. Many people are therefore willing to spend millions to buy delicious and beautiful offerings for the ceremony. Therefore, on these occasions, she often "closes orders until her hands are tired" and is always in a state of "out of stock".
Receiving 200 offerings to the God of Wealth on the 10th day of the first lunar month this year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Thuy (Hanoi) and her family of 4 had to stay up all night to prepare.
Ms. Thuy said that many days ago, she posted on her personal page two sets of offerings to the God of Wealth, priced at 555,000 VND and 675,000 VND for customers to choose from. The 675,000 VND offering includes Alaskan lobster, sticky rice, roast pork, crab, boiled eggs, and dumplings. For the cheaper offering, Ms. Thuy replaced the lobster with 5 king prawns.
According to Ms. Thuy, the three-sentence trays for the God of Wealth all use fresh seafood as the main ingredient. Therefore, she only accepts pre-orders to prepare the most carefully.
“As of the morning of the 9th of the first lunar month, I had received 169 orders. By evening, I had only received 20 more orders from the last customers. Early this morning, many people still called to ask to buy, but I had to refuse them all,” said Ms. Thuy.
According to Ms. Thuy, some customers want to order more expensive offerings. However, Ms. Thuy only offers two basic sets with average prices to serve the most and make it easy and convenient when preparing the ceremony.
Ms. Thuy said that food prices are still quite expensive these days. This requires sellers to plan ahead to ensure they can buy the freshest shrimp, crab or meat.
After the offerings are completed, Ms. Thuy beautifully arranges them and delivers them to customers. Upon receiving them, families only need to remove the plastic wrap to make offerings.
Many suppliers of God of Wealth offerings this time also said that the prices of seafood such as shrimp and crab this year are higher than previous years. This pushes the prices of offerings higher. Therefore, most sellers only accept a moderate number of orders with the imported ingredients, and they have to refuse customers who order close to the time or on the same day.
