Causes of illegal gold mining recurrence in Tra Bong

Illegal gold mining is common in the mountainous areas of Tra Bong district, Quang Ngai province. Tra Bong district is continuing to implement solutions to prevent illegal gold mining.

From December 15, 2023 to June 22, 2024, Tra Bong District Police (Quang Ngai) coordinated with specialized agencies and local authorities to organize 6 raids on illegal gold mining.

In June 2024, Tra Bong District Police coordinated with Tra Binh Commune Police to successfully eradicate an illegal gold mining site on Ho Du Hill (Binh Tan Village, Tra Binh Commune, Tra Bong District). Previously, in January 2024, Tra Thanh Commune Police patrolled and raided an illegal gold mining site in Suoi Lat (Go Village, Tra Thanh Commune).

According to Vice Chairman of Tra Bong District People's Committee Ho Van Thinh, due to the rugged mountainous terrain, many subjects fled into the deep forest and could not be caught or had stopped mining activities, leaving only their belongings at the scene. Tra Bong District Police have transferred the case file to the Chairman of the District People's Committee to issue a decision to administratively sanction the two subjects.

Through verification, the reason for the continuous recurrence of gold mining is that local people do not have stable jobs, have low incomes, and their awareness of protecting resources and the environment is limited.

In addition, some local authorities have not been really determined to deal with illegal gold miners who are from outside the locality. On the other hand, these subjects often take advantage of the rugged, difficult-to-access mountainous terrain, deep in the protected forest, far from residential areas, and few people to secretly mine gold, so it is predicted that in the coming time, some subjects may continue to operate.

According to Mr. Ho Van Thinh, in the coming time, the military, police, and militia forces will continue to sweep, patrol, and suppress to prevent the spread of hot spots. In addition, propaganda and mobilization will be organized to help people understand the harm and dangers from the negative impacts caused by illegal gold mining.
