Yen Bai - Lang Cau is a particularly difficult village in Tan Hop commune, Van Yen district, with 90% of the population being Dao people. Previously, the villagers mainly lived on slash-and-burn farming, with an unstable economy and famine. However, with the spirit of rising up, many people in Lang Cau have worked hard, produced, and overcome poverty.

Mr. Ban Van Minh is a Dao ethnic, born and raised in Lang Cau. Like many families in Lang Cau in the past, Minh's family was no exception. Not resigned to poverty, Minh was determined to find a way to get rich.
"Since 1985, the development of production forests, especially cinnamon trees, has become a widespread movement throughout the commune. Keeping up with that forest planting movement, my family has proactively switched from purely slash-and-burn cultivation to production forest planting, and from growing low-value trees to growing cinnamon. I am determined to develop the economy from cinnamon trees, so wherever my family works on the slash-and-burn fields, we plant cinnamon trees there" - Mr. Ban Van Minh shared.
Working hard in production, up to now, Minh's family has more than 60 hectares of cinnamon, of which more than 45 hectares have been harvested, and more than 15 hectares are cinnamon from 1 to 3 years old. Minh's family also actively increases production and raises poultry. From growing cinnamon and increasing production, Minh's family has an income of about 1.7 billion VND per year and creates regular jobs for 6-8 workers with an income of 7.5-8 million VND/person/month.
Mr. Tran Van Thu is also one of the typical examples of success in Lang Cau. Mr. Thu said: "When I first moved out, my family was like other families in the village, facing many economic difficulties. I always wondered how to develop the economy and stabilize my family's life. Realizing the abundant and fertile land resources and the strengths of cinnamon trees, I discussed with my family about growing cinnamon on the family's land. The government created conditions for me to participate in training on cinnamon growing techniques and borrow capital from the Social Policy Bank to buy cinnamon seedlings."
During the early period when cinnamon had not been harvested and there was no income, Mr. Thu and his family actively intercropped short-term crops, raised livestock and poultry to improve their lives. When he started to earn income from cinnamon, he discussed with his wife to buy more land to expand the cinnamon area. Up to now, Mr. Thu's family has more than 20 hectares of cinnamon, of which more than 15 hectares have been harvested and more than 5 hectares are cinnamon from 1 to 3 years old. Growing cinnamon combined with raising livestock, up to now, from sources of income in labor and production, his family has a total income of about 700 million VND/year and creates regular jobs for 3-5 workers with an income of 5-6 million VND/month.
Mr. Thu excitedly said: "From a family with normal economic conditions, my family now has enough food and savings, can buy equipment for life and send our children to school."
Village Chief of Lang Cau - Trieu Thua Quyen shared: "Compared to before, it can be said that life in Lang Cau has changed dramatically. In the village, many people are role models for people to learn about the spirit of labor production, overcoming poverty, such as Mr. Tran Van Thu, Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, Mr. Ban Van Minh or Ms. Dang Thi Them. Not only that, Lang Cau people also unite to help each other develop the economy such as lending over 300 million VND without interest, providing guidance and help with seedlings, creating jobs for each other...".
With better economic conditions, the people of Lang Cau have united together to build the village. Recently, the people of Lang Cau have agreed to donate over 20,000 m2 of land to build rural infrastructure, contributed over 1.2 billion VND to build, open new and expand over 8 km of rural roads; contributed over 200 laborers to build new and repair 2 great solidarity houses; together built and implemented village and hamlet conventions to build the cultural life of the residential area...
The spirit of overcoming difficulties and solidarity of the people of Lang Cau will continue to be an important factor for Lang Cau to change and become more prosperous.
