Mr. Son also affirmed that after 3 years of testing (since 2020), telecommunications enterprises now have enough basis to evaluate the quality of network infrastructure, efficiency as well as business plans.
"Now is considered the right time for frequency auctions so that businesses can provide commercial 5G services. 5G will promote digital society, digital economy, and digital government. There is no reason not to take advantage of the benefits this technology brings," said a Viettel representative.
Although the number of users ready to use 5G is at a high level, the rate of devices supporting this connection in Vietnam is still low. Mr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Deputy Head of Technology Department of VNPT Group, said that currently only about 18% of devices of VNPT network users have 5G, but this rate can increase very quickly in the near future.

MobiFone's Deputy Head of Communications Le Mai Son also gave a similar rate when about 16 - 17% of users' terminal devices on this network support 5G. Viettel's rate is 17 - 20%. The reason is that the cost of 5G devices is higher than the general income level - a similar phenomenon also occurs with the 4G network in the early stages. However, the number of 5G devices sold each year is estimated at 5 - 6 million devices and is increasingly popularized, so it will soon become more popular.
Sharing more about the challenges of deploying 5G, Viettel representative said that there are not many content services on 5G yet, only 4K, 8K videos, live streaming, and few AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality) services... Therefore, network operators must be the pioneers in deploying content development for 5G.
After 3 years, network operators have deployed 5G trials in 55 provinces and cities across the country and have achieved positive results, providing initial data for network operators to evaluate and develop plans for future network expansion.
A representative of VNPT Group said that the unit has deployed 5G testing early, with a presence in nearly 20 provinces and cities and appeared at events, festivals, and tourism services. Viettel tested 5G in most provinces and cities, with more than 1 million experiences. MobiFone has deployed 5G testing in Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc... "During the testing process, normal customers will feel the change in latency and speed," said Mr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh.
All three major network operators in Vietnam believe that it is necessary to promote the early commercialization of 5G. However, a representative of MobiFone believes that the 5G network infrastructure should be shared to shorten the time, investment volume and reduce risks for network operators.
It is expected that in January 2024, the Ministry of Information and Communications will announce the frequency auction plan for the 5G network. The auction will end in late February or early March 2024. Ms. Vu Thu Hien, Head of the Frequency Policy and Planning Department (Radio Frequency Department) said that after completing the mid-range frequency auction, the Department will assess market demand to continue auctioning other frequency bands.
In the Asia-Pacific region, 5G has been widely applied in industries and proven effective, creating millions of new jobs and stimulating stable economic growth. Mr. Hidetaka Shiraishi, Senior Director of Global 5G Marketing and Deployment of Huawei Technologies, assessed that 5G is an important factor in the transformation from traditional economy to digital economy, and is the driving force to promote the development of digital economy.
Some examples of 5G deployment in industries in China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. can be considered as practical evidence for countries that follow. For example, at Pattaya Beach, Thailand, the local government deployed new applications on the 5G network to significantly improve management and monitoring from weather forecasting, traffic management, beach security and super-fast mobile broadband connection for everyone.
