This will be Mr Rubio's first trip to the Middle East after US President Donald Trump made a controversial proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza.

According to Reuters news agency, Secretary of State Rubio will attend the Munich Security Conference, then travel to Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Saudi Arabia from February 13-18.

Human rights groups have condemned President Donald Trump's proposal that Palestinians in Gaza should be permanently relocated as part of a US takeover of the territory.

Speaking on February 6, the US Secretary of State said that Palestinians in Gaza will have to temporarily resettle while the area is rebuilt after the bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas.

During his trip, Rubio will discuss the situation in Gaza and the fallout from the October 7, 2023 attack by the Hamas militant group, and promote the US President's approach to creating change in the region.

“This status quo cannot last forever. It’s a cycle that, once it becomes familiar, people start to think it’s not going to change. President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio believe that’s not true, things can change,” Reuters quoted a senior US State Department official as saying.

Since January 25, Mr. Trump has repeatedly suggested that Arab countries in the region, such as Egypt and Jordan, should take in Palestinians from Gaza.

However, this idea has been strongly rejected by many Arab countries and Palestinians. The US leader's proposal also revives the Palestinians' long-standing fear of being permanently expelled from their homeland.

Israel's recent attack on Gaza has forced almost the entire population of the strip of land to flee their homes and caused a serious food crisis.
