According to Reuters , the Kremlin reacted cautiously after Donald Trump won the 2024 US presidential election, saying the US remains an "unfriendly country" and only time will prove whether Trump's statement about ending the conflict in Ukraine will come true.

"Let's not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly country, which is directly and indirectly opposing us in the war in Ukraine," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference on November 6.

Mr Peskov added that he had “no information” about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin had congratulated Mr Trump on his victory, and said relations with Washington were “at a record low”.

"We have repeatedly said that the United States can contribute to the process of ending the conflict in Ukraine. This cannot be done overnight, but the United States is capable of changing the direction of its foreign policy. Whether this will happen, and if so, how... we will see after the inauguration of the US President in January 2025," Peskov said.

President Putin and Russian officials had said before the US election that it did not matter to Moscow who won.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has insisted that the country has no illusions about Mr Trump and will work with the new administration when it enters the White House.

"Russia will resolutely defend its national interests and focus on achieving all the stated goals of the special military operation in Ukraine," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "Our conditions have not changed and this is well understood in Washington."

Meanwhile, Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia's influential sovereign wealth fund, offered a more subdued assessment, suggesting that Trump's victory could be an opportunity for the two countries to mend relations.

Donald Trump, 78, pledged to quickly end the war in Ukraine, although he did not give a precise timeline for how he would do so.

Russian President Putin said he was ready to negotiate but Russia's interests had to be accepted, which Ukrainian leaders saw as "unacceptable surrender".

On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Donald Trump after the media announced his re-election as US President, expressing hope for "strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the US".

Mr Zelensky recalled a “wonderful meeting” with Mr Trump in September, when the two discussed in detail the Ukraine-US strategic partnership and the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

“I appreciate Mr. Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach to global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can bring a just peace in Ukraine closer,” Mr. Zelensky wrote.

The President of Ukraine expressed his wish to have the opportunity to personally congratulate Mr. Trump and discuss ways to strengthen Ukraine's strategic partnership with the United States.
