Russia airstrike, Ukraine base destroyed, smoke and fire rising dozens of meters high

RT reported on May 22 that the Russian military attacked a Ukrainian military position in the town of Seversk in Donbass with a bomb. A video recording the moment the building was attacked was shared on social media. Public images showed that multi-storey buildings - used by the Ukrainian military - were attacked with bombs.

Several Telegram channels identified the bomb used in the attack as a FAB-1500 high-explosive bomb, weighing about 1.5 tons. Such bombs are often used to destroy defense systems or fortifications as well as military industrial facilities.

Other sources say the bomb used in the attack was an explosive air-fueled bomb (ODAB). Such bombs have a dispersion charge that disperses the fuel over a significant area when it hits a target. The fuel contained within the bomb vaporizes and mixes with the air to form a gas cloud. A secondary charge is then ignited, igniting the cloud and creating a large explosion.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not confirmed the attack or commented on videos posted on social media. Earlier in May, Ukrainian officials compared the explosion caused by the FAB-1500 to an “earthquake” when it was used to attack Ukrainian defense forces in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

In March, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that production of the FAB-1500 bomb had doubled since the beginning of the year. It also said that production of the smaller FAB-500 bomb had increased “many times.” It has been reported that these bombs have been converted into high-precision glide munitions by being equipped with so-called universal glide and adjustment modules.

The town of Seversk is located in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, about 15 km from the front line.

Russian forces are now continuing their offensive in Donbass and the Kharkiv region. The operation in northeastern Ukraine was launched in early May in response to repeated Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure on the border with Russia. Russian forces have made impressive gains in recent weeks, pushing Ukrainian forces out of several settlements in both the Donbass and Kharkiv regions. On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the village of Klescheevka had been captured, giving Russian forces control of strategically important high ground in Donbass.
