(Dan Tri) - Vu The Son - a student of class 12A12 at Phung Khac Khoan High School - has won the national excellent student award in physics for two consecutive years. He used to have a low score on the high school entrance exam.
Failing the entrance exam to a specialized school, a "village school" male student's talent was discovered by the principal. The Hanoi physics team participating in the national excellent student competition for the 2023-2024 school year has only one "village school" student. That is Vu The Son - a student of class 12A12 at Phung Khac Khoan High School, Thach That district. Son scored 26 points, won the second prize nationwide and ranked 5th in the Hanoi delegation. The remaining 19 candidates are specialized students from the following schools: Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Hue High School, Chu Van An High School, Son Tay High School. Notably, this is the second year Son has won a national prize. In the 2022-2023 school year, Son took the exam to advance his level and won third prize, also being the only "village school" student in the team.

The person who discovered and trained Son was Mr. Nghiem Hong Trung - Principal of Phung Khac Khoan High School. Son had taken the entrance exam to the High School for Natural Sciences but failed. He passed the district school with a low score, not reaching the score required to enter the school's selective class. However, at the beginning of the school year, according to the policy set by Mr. Trung, all students completed a survey on their interests, abilities, and strengths. In Son's survey, Mr. Trung saw that he had won a city-level excellent student award in physics. Therefore, Mr. Trung still decided to let Son take a separate thinking test. After Son passed this test, Mr. Trung placed Son in a talent training class to help him maximize his abilities. Every Saturday and Sunday, Mr. Trung comes to school to work in the physics lab. Here, he directly tutors Son and a few other students with special qualities. Thanks to his outstanding talent, in the first semester of grade 10, Son won first prize in physics at the Thach That - Quoc Oai cluster. A year later, Mr. Trung put Son in a group of four of the best students in grade 12. Son continued to show his talent when he surpassed his seniors, winning second prize at the city level and third prize at the national level. Mr. Trung said that Son's achievements were contributed by many teachers. The teachers who taught Son were not only from Phung Khac Khoan High School but also the teachers who trained Son during the time of the Hanoi national physics team. In addition, there were teachers that Mr. Trung connected with to teach his students through both direct and online forms. "I am not qualified to teach students to win national prizes. That is the work of many other teachers and I am very grateful for this," Mr. Son confided. Vu The Son's mother shared that, outside of school hours, Son has a group of friends who are students from specialized schools who regularly exchange information, discuss lessons, and share good documents. Son learns a lot from his friends. Except for the time when he studies hard for exams, Son maintains a stable study schedule, goes to bed at 11:30 p.m., and entertains himself with soccer. Son plans to pursue automation at university. The youngest principal in Hanoi reveals the secret to bringing national prizes to "village schools" At the age of 35, Mr. Nghiem Hong Trung was appointed principal of Phung Khac Khoan High School, becoming the youngest principal of a high school in Hanoi. One of the tasks that Mr. Trung focuses on promoting in his position as principal is nurturing excellent students. In his opinion, with just a standard model and the right methods, students from village schools can also become excellent. Mr. Trung started implementing the "pyramid model" solution by surveying each student's strengths, then grouping students into classes according to their abilities and strengths. During the implementation process, Mr. Trung monitored the development and adaptation of each student. Students who were not suitable for the teacher in charge or did not make the necessary effort were transferred to another class.

"I always tell my students that no teacher is good enough for every student. There will be suitable students, and there will be students who are not. So my job is to give students to the right teachers," Mr. Trung shared. Mr. Trung once took his son out of the math orientation class of his school because he saw that his son was not suitable. After 3 years of implementing the "pyramid model" solution for training and nurturing talents, Phung Khac Khoan High School won its first national prize in literature in 2020. In 2021, the school won a national prize in chemistry. In the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years, the school won a third prize and a second prize in physics, won by Vu The Son. In addition, the number of excellent students at the city level at Phung Khac Khoan High School is very large every year. Mr. Trung's "pyramid model" solution won the "Dedicated and Creative Hanoi Teacher" award for its feasibility and effectiveness, especially at a school with one of the lowest entrance scores for grade 10 in Hanoi. In 2023, the school had a benchmark score of 28.75, an average of more than 5.6 points/subject. Mr. Trung graduated from Hanoi National University of Education, majoring in physics education, and won the National Physics Olympiad for students. Not only does he have a breakthrough solution in training excellent students, Mr. Trung also promotes arts and sports activities at the school. Phung Khac Khoan High School is the first non-specialized public high school in Hanoi to teach music with the entire curriculum and personnel transferred and supported by the Vietnam National Academy of Music. The school has also reached the finals of the Hanoi - Capital Security High School Football Tournament 4 times.
