When brought to the A9 Emergency Center, Bach Mai Hospital, the patient was in a coma and had out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Although the patient received active cardiac arrest and his heart started beating again, and natural circulation was re-established, he remained in a deep coma.
Mr. S. was then transferred to the Stroke Center and had a CT scan of the brain, consultation and diagnosis of coma, out-of-hospital circulatory arrest due to severe diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage (Hunt Hess V) suspected of being caused by a ruptured cerebral vascular malformation.
The multidisciplinary consultation board decided to perform digital subtraction angiography to find the source of bleeding, and discovered a ruptured right vertebral artery aneurysm. The patient underwent emergency aneurysm embolization using Coils.
After the intervention, the patient remained in a deep coma, had a persistent high fever, and did not respond to treatment, despite active resuscitation, anti-cerebral edema, electrolyte control, and body temperature control.
After the intervention, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Center for further treatment with a diagnosis of coma after circulatory arrest, cerebral hemorrhage due to rupture of the right vertebral artery aneurysm, and pneumonia.
Over the next 9 days, despite intensive treatment and resuscitation efforts, the patient's condition did not improve, he gradually fell into a deep coma, lost his reflexes and was at risk of brain death.
Through many hospital-wide consultations, with the assessment that the patient was at high risk of approaching brain death, the hospital explained the patient's prognosis and discussed with the patient's family the noble significance of the national human tissue and organ donation program.
And the purpose of bringing life to patients who are struggling day and night with illness and the noble humanistic meaning of saving people "giving is forever" has convinced the family of patient S.
Witnessing 10 days of doctors and medical staff devoted to Mr. S., the patient's family understood and expressed their wish to donate organs to save lives and bring life to others.
This is an extremely precious sacrifice that demonstrates compassion to bring miracles to patients who are suffering from pain and despair.
After completing the legal procedures with the direction and support of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, 108 Military Central Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, Hue Central Hospital... coordinated to perform surgery to remove the patient's organs for transfer to the recipient.
According to management, within only 4 hours and 30 minutes from the time of taking it from the donor cage, the heart was transported to Hue Central Hospital for a heart transplant for a patient with heart failure; the liver was transferred to 108 Military Central Hospital for a liver transplant; and the two kidneys were transplanted by doctors at 108 Military Central Hospital right at Bach Mai Hospital for two patients with end-stage kidney failure.
The life transfer at Bach Mai Hospital has gone through a challenging journey and achieved the desired results. Life has been extended and the noble values have moved and touched the deep emotions of each person. The noble gestures will certainly be spread and connected in the fight for human life, for people's health.
Every year more than 30,000 people die from injuries.
Every year, more than 30,000 people die from injuries in Vietnam, accounting for 7% of all deaths. Injuries not only cause great loss of life but also create a significant economic and social burden.
The Department of Health Environment Management (Ministry of Health) has just coordinated with the University of Public Health to organize the 4th national scientific conference on injury prevention and control with the theme: "Reducing the burden of injuries: The effectiveness of sustainable policies and interventions".
In his speech at the conference, Deputy Minister of Health Le Duc Luan said that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), injuries account for 11% of the global disease burden, of which 80% is in developing countries.
Every year, 4.4 million people die (nearly 8% of all deaths) and 78 million are permanently disabled due to injuries. Road traffic accidents, drowning, falls and violence are the main causes.
In Vietnam, in the disease model, Deputy Minister Le Duc Luan said, injuries account for more than 11%. According to a report by the Ministry of Health, in the period 2019-2023, more than 30,000 people die each year from injuries, accounting for 7% of total deaths from all causes. About more than 80 people die from injuries every day. Traffic accidents, drowning and work accidents are the leading causes.
According to the Deputy Minister of Health, although there have been many efforts in accident and injury prevention, this is still a worrying issue.
Statistics from medical facilities show that, on average, each year there are more than 1.1 million cases of accidents and injuries coming to medical facilities for examination and treatment, and more than 30,000 people die from accidents and injuries.
Road traffic accidents, drowning and work-related accidents are the leading causes of death due to injury. This shows that, although certain results have been achieved, Vietnam needs to continue to make more efforts and invest more to reduce injuries and minimize the consequences caused by injuries.
According to Deputy Minister Le Duc Luan, Vietnam has been implementing activities and policies to reduce accidents and injuries.
According to statistics, from 2012 to present, the death rate due to accidents and injuries per 100,000 people has decreased by about 28%. Nearly 500 communes/wards have been recognized as safe communities - Preventing accidents and injuries.
“However, the number of deaths remains high, and there are still many potential risks of accidents and injuries due to climate change, natural disasters, catastrophes, etc. Even traffic accidents and work accidents still pose many risks,” said Deputy Minister Le Duc Luan.
