With diligence, hard work and knowing how to apply science and technology to production, over the past 10 years, Mr. Nguyen Van Bay and his wife Ms. Le Thi Nhan (village 2, Ea Khal commune, Ea H'leo district, Dak Lak) have turned 9 hectares of rocky hills into a lush fruit garden, bringing in a good income.
Previously, Mr. Bay’s family’s rocky hilly land was almost impossible to grow anything on. By studying and researching plant varieties and soil quality, Mr. Bay realized that lychee and longan could be grown on rocky soil. In 2016, Mr. Bay discussed with his wife to buy U Hong and U Egg lychee varieties for experimental planting.

Not in vain for the hard work of the farmers, after 3 years of planting and caring, Mr. Bay's lychee garden has produced its first sweet fruit. The lychee has thick flesh, sweet taste, and quality not inferior to lychee grown in the northern provinces, and traders come to the garden to buy it at a high price.
The initial success of the lychee tree has encouraged Mr. Bay and his wife to boldly invest and expand the planting area to 700 more T6 longan trees on 2 hectares of land in 2020.
Mr. Bay shared: “The T6 longan variety has many advantages such as: beautiful, large, round, juicy, sweet and fragrant fruit, so it is very popular with consumers, so consumption is very convenient. In addition, the tree can produce fruit as desired, and can be harvested many times a year, thereby increasing family income.”
To help the garden grow well, Mr. Bay and his wife pay attention to every step in the care process.
Because the family's garden area is rocky and hilly, with a slope, and fertilizer is easily washed away, he invested in an automatic sprinkler irrigation system to maintain regular watering; he also fertilizes the plants 3-4 times a year with organic fertilizer to ensure nutrients.
Thanks to that, lychee and longan gardens yield higher yields year after year.
In 2024, Mr. Bay's family harvested 30 tons of lychee and 20 tons of longan. Traders came to the garden to harvest and buy at an average price of 27,000 - 28,000 VND/kg. His family earned more than 1 billion VND from the orchard.
Not only developing the family economy, Mr. Bay and Ms. Nhan are always willing to share their experiences as well as techniques for planting, caring for, and selecting tree varieties with local farmers, encouraging them to develop the economy and get rich legitimately.
Mr. Bay cherishes the plan to expand the area of lychee and longan, and at the same time connect with neighboring growers to establish cooperatives for more sustainable development from this crop.
