“We look forward to welcoming villages that represent the role of rural tourism as a transformative force for good,” said UN Secretary-General of Tourism Zurab Pololikashvili.
UN Tourism member countries have been invited to submit up to eight candidate villages through their respective National Tourism Authorities (NTAs).
Accordingly, the application deadline will end on May 19, 2025. The villages recognized as the Best Tourist Villages of 2025 are expected to be announced in the third quarter of the United Nations Tourism event.
“The UN Tourism Best Villages Awards celebrate rural destinations where tourism acts as a catalyst for opportunity, cultural preservation and sustainable growth,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.
“By harnessing their unique assets, these villages create opportunities for economic growth, preserve local traditions and promote a better quality of life for their communities. We look forward to welcoming villages that represent the role of rural tourism as a transformative force for good,” said Zurab Pololikashvili.
Candidates, after submitting their applications through their respective National Tourism Authority (NTA), will be evaluated by an external Advisory Board of global experts based on nine key areas: Natural and cultural resources; promotion and conservation of cultural resources; economic sustainability; social sustainability; environmental sustainability; tourism development and value chain integration; tourism management and priorities; infrastructure and connectivity; health, safety and security.
To date, UN Tourism has awarded prizes to 130 villages worldwide, including 3 Vietnamese villages recognized in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively: Thai Hai Village (Thai Nguyen), Tan Hoa Village (Quang Binh) and Tra Que Vegetable Village (Quang Nam).
UN Tourism’s Best Villages initiative aims to leverage tourism as a tool for rural development, well-being and resilience. By combining efforts to appreciate and conserve rural landscapes, cultural diversity and knowledge systems, the initiative promotes innovative tourism strategies that are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative includes three integral components: Recognition as the Best Tourist Village; Upgrading Program; Best Tourist Village Network. |
