Several members of the Bambia team suffered headaches due to lack of oxygen, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing, while en route to the Ivory Coast for the African Cup of Nations.
The incident occurred on January 10, on a flight from Gambia. Nine minutes after takeoff, many team members complained of headaches or dizziness due to a failure of the oxygen supply system. The plane was forced to return to Banjul International Airport.
The plane that crashed was a small chartered plane. According to defender Saidy Janko, the players felt stuffy when they first boarded the plane. At that time, the crew promised that the air conditioning would work during the flight. However, this mistake almost led to disaster.
"Many people suffered terrible headaches and dizziness," Janko wrote on Instagram . "Without an emergency landing, the consequences could have been much worse. This is unacceptable and must stop immediately."
A day after the incident, Gambian President Adama Barrow provided a larger plane to fly the team directly to the Ivorian city of Yamoussoukro, instead of Abidjan, where they were supposed to connect to another flight.
Gambia are in Group C of the African Cup of Nations alongside defending champions Senegal, Guinea and Cameroon. They will play Senegal on January 15. Gambia's best result was reaching the quarterfinals in 2021, where they lost 0-2 to Cameroon. The team is currently ranked 126th in the FIFA rankings.
