Mr. Pham Thanh Tung - Head of Vinh Long Market Management Board - said that by 11:00 am on February 9 (30th of Tet), the consumption of chrysanthemums, marigolds, roses... was relatively high, the remaining flowers were being discounted by traders to hand over the premises.
According to Mr. Tung, the purchasing power of mai, kumquat and bougainvillea is very slow, only about 40 - 50% have been consumed. Many retailers in Cho Lach district, Ben Tre province are offering deep discounts to sell out the remaining trees.
Trader Nguyen Thi Y (born in 1956, in Cho Lach district, Ben Tre province) said that she has been involved in growing and selling Tet ornamental plants for over 20 years, but has never seen a year with such weak purchasing power.
Ms. Y confided that, having predicted the situation, this year she only brought 70 kumquat trees from 1 to 5 years old. Starting to sell from January 31 (21st day of the lunar calendar), it has been 9 days but only nearly 40 pots have been sold. "In the early days, the kumquat trees were over 1m tall, with lush green leaves and abundant fruit, and were sold for 500,000 - 600,000 VND. Now, when customers are invited to buy each pot for only 200,000 VND, they still shake their heads," Ms. Y added.
Sharing the same "sluggish" situation, Mrs. Nam Hoa (in Mang Thit district) who sells bougainvillea said that this year, she only brought nearly 100 stems of various types to the market. A decrease of nearly 50% compared to 2023. "The consumption of bougainvillea has decreased a lot this year. Customers come to see, do not ask for prices and then leave" - Mrs. Hoa said.
While tying a pot of bougainvillea to the saddle, Mr. Tran Cong Minh (in Ward 4, Vinh Long City, Vinh Long Province) said that on the 26th of Tet, he bought 2 pots of bougainvillea for 200,000 VND/pot. Today, when he went to the market, he saw that the bougainvillea was 50% off, so he bought more.
"Buying this extra pot of bougainvillea is to help the seller sell all their goods and return home early to reunite with their family, and to have another pot of beautifully blooming bougainvillea to display in the house during Tet," said Mr. Minh.
“The operating time at the Giap Thin Spring Flower Market 2024 is until 2:00 p.m. on February 9 (the 30th of Tet). At this time, the Market Management Board, Police, and Military will take over the site to arrange for the art program and fireworks to celebrate New Year's Eve tonight,” Mr. Tung informed.
