The weak Yen, unique cuisine, shopping paradise... are these the reasons why Chinese tourists choose to travel to Japan?

Japan was the top travel destination for Chinese tourists during the Lunar New Year holiday, with bookings on travel website Trip.com doubling from a year earlier, SCMP reported.
Data provided by the Japan Tourism Council shows that in 2024, the number of visitors from China will reach 6.98 million, three times higher than in 2023. Experts predict that this number is expected to continue to increase this year.
Although China is the second largest tourist market after South Korea, it is the biggest spender with 1.73 trillion Yen (11 billion USD).
Kyodo News quoted industry experts as saying that the increase in interest is partly due to the weakening yen and warming China-Japan relations.
According to SCMP , in November 2024, China included Japan in its visa exemption program, allowing visitors to stay up to 30 days.
In contrast, in December 2024, Japan also relaxed visa regulations for Chinese tourists, extending the maximum duration of multiple-entry visas from 5 years to 10 years, while the maximum length of stay for tourist groups will also be increased from 15 days to 30 days. This creates favorable conditions for Chinese tourists who want to visit the land of cherry blossoms.
In addition, public opinion between the two countries has a more positive perspective. This is considered by many experts as a positive signal for Japan to attract Chinese tourists.
Snowy areas and hot springs in Japan are popular with Chinese tourists, such as Sapporo, Hakodate and Hokkaido. According to a survey reported by Chinese media, about 41.5% of Chinese tourists come to Japan for the purpose of “seeing winter snow”.
Kouraku Japan Co. President Yuan Jing said that after the Chinese government promoted the development of winter sports, many Chinese tourists have chosen to join ski tours in famous locations in Japan.
At the same time, according to analysis of social media posts, landscape and cuisine are still the biggest reasons why Chinese tourists come to the land of cherry blossoms.
Another reason is that Thailand - one of the popular destinations for Chinese tourists - has become less attractive due to the increase in human trafficking cases, causing concerns about travel safety. This has caused tourists to turn to safer countries.
