In a new study published in the journal Nature on May 17, scientists claim that the theory of evolution from a single origin - which holds that there was only one place where humans originated - is incorrect.
The research team included scientists from the University of Wisconsin, the University of California, Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, USA, Stellenbosch University in South Africa and McGill University in Quebec (Canada).
“Decades of research on human genome variation have suggested a branching trunk-like model of population divergence from a single ancestral population in Africa,” the study said.
The team studied the genomes of about 300 people from a wide range of ancestry (some dating back millions of years), but could not pinpoint a single point of origin for humans.
Instead, they found that there were at least two populations that could have been the origin of humans—which they called population 1 and population 2. Both of these populations originated in Africa, but not in the same place.
According to researchers, hundreds of thousands of years ago, human populations began to mix, and the two populations merged to form the starting point of a group of people living in Africa.
The team used computer models to study how human DNA spread across Africa over time. While it is unclear where populations 1 and 2 originated, the scientists believe that the DNA from populations 1 and 2 survived and then influenced human ancestors 25,000 years ago.
The study also suggests that a mysterious ancient human population, or “ghost” humans, may have contributed to migration events and contributed to the genetic data.
