The United Nations has a new Deputy Secretary-General.

On October 9, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed British Tom Fletcher as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Mr Fletcher will succeed Mr Martin Griffiths - also British, who has held the position of Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator from July 2021 to June 2024.

According to the UN announcement, Ms. Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, will continue to serve as Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator until Mr. Fletcher takes office.

Mr Fletcher, currently Chancellor of Hertford College, Oxford and Vice-Chair of the Oxford University College Council, has extensive experience in leadership and institutional reform, along with a deep understanding of diplomacy at the highest levels, the announcement said.

Mr Fletcher previously served as Global Strategy Director of the Global Business Alliance for Education (2015-2019), and led refugee education work under former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Mr Fletcher also served as British Ambassador to Lebanon from 2011 to 2015.
