On the morning of October 6, people in Song Hai village, Thach Son commune, Thach Ha district went to visit the sea bass cages on Nghen river, below Do Diem sluice gate, and discovered that the fish were suffering from water shock and the cages were white.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh (born in 1964, Song Hai village, Thach Son commune) said: At 4am, when I went to check the cages to prepare to feed the fish, I noticed an unusual sign when the fish floated to the surface of the water. Very quickly after that, the sea bass raised in 5 cages began to die. As soon as the incident was discovered, the family tried to scoop up the fish to freeze and called traders to buy them to reduce the damage.
The number of dead barramundi in the cages was white.
According to Mr. Vinh, the family has raised the barramundi for 1-3 years with a weight of 0.8-2.5kg/fish. At this time, the number of fish in 5 cages is estimated at 500kg and with the current market price of 170,000-180,000/kg, the family has lost about 100 million VND.
Not only Mr. Vinh's family, all the barramundi fish in the cages of households in Song Hai village raising fish in cages on Nghen river below Do Diem sluice gate all died.
Initial damage statistics from the People's Committee of Thach Son commune show that 53 households raising barramundi in more than 200 cages on Nghen river died, with a total quantity of 50 tons.
People raising fish in cages in Thach Son commune reported that before the fish died, Do Diem bara opened the sluice gate to regulate the water. However, on the morning of October 6, the discharge was large and the water was more turbid than usual.
The water in the cages is cloudy.
According to local people, the large amount of fresh water flowing from Do Diem river causes the farming environment in the cages to change suddenly, combined with the possibility of water pollution, causing the fish to go into shock.
Local authorities sent forces to help people collect fish.
Party Secretary - Chairman of Thach Son Commune People's Committee Tran Huu Nghia said: As soon as receiving information about the incident, the commune mobilized human resources to support people in collecting fish from cages to shore and called on people to join hands in "rescuing" the dead fish to help people reduce damage.

Mr. Tran Huu Nghia said that of the 50 tons of barramundi fish raised in cages on the Nghen River that died, most of them could have been harvested. Before the fish died, the local government had announced, even advised, and encouraged people to harvest the fish that had reached their weight. However, households were still hesitant to sell them and tried to raise them for a while longer.
“This is not the first time that fish in cages in the Do Diem sluice have died. It is the rainy and stormy season, so the commune has continuously urged people to harvest to avoid unfortunate incidents. The fish deaths have caused great damage to local people,” added the Party Secretary and Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thach Son commune.
People joined hands to rescue dead fish to help people.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoang - Head of Ha Tinh Fisheries Department said: After receiving information that fish raised in cages of Song Hai villagers on Nghen River died, the unit coordinated with specialized units of Thach Ha district and Thach Son commune to inspect, collect water samples and fish samples in the cages to conduct analysis and clarify the cause.
