Mr. Huynh Van Cap (Nam Cap) - Director of Dong Thanh Sweet Pomelo Cooperative (Binh Minh Town) has selected varieties, developed the area of sweet pomelo, combined with the method of processing the fruit in different seasons to bring high economic value.

According to Mr. Nam Cap, sour pomelos are easy to grow and produce a lot of fruit, but their economic value is not high and they are difficult to sell. Meanwhile, sweet pomelos are the opposite...
Understanding this, Mr. Nam Cap traveled to many places to find sweet pomelo varieties to grow in over 40 hectares of his home garden.

“I spent many years traveling everywhere to buy and research many varieties to test-plant. Around 2012, I discovered that this sweet pomelo variety grows very well, even in poor soil. In particular, the tree has very few pests and diseases, and almost no pesticides are needed during the fruit-setting and ripening stages. I just spray it lightly when it blooms to avoid insects eating the flowers, then when the fruit turns yellow, I hang a trap to catch fruit flies,” Mr. Cap shared.

According to Mr. Nam Cap, after about 3 years of planting, the first batch of sweet pomelos will bear fruit weighing 3-5kg, then gradually increasing each year, until reaching 10 years old, it can harvest 50-60kg/tree.

In 2021, Mr. Nam Cap established a cooperative and developed a local sweet pomelo area of more than 15 hectares. In addition to selling fruit, the cooperative also provides a large number of seedlings to the people. Nam Cap sweet pomelo fruit is also recognized as having achieved 4-star certification. And in order not to be confused with other sweet pomelo varieties, Mr. Nam Cap named the pomelo seedlings he propagated "Nam Cap sweet pomelo".

More excitedly, from 2024 until now, he has successfully applied the lamp-smudging technique for pomelo trees to bear fruit in different seasons. After 2 seasons of application, he has successfully treated the trees, the trees bear fruit 1 month earlier, achieving high yield, and selling at a good price. According to him, for naturally grown pomelo trees, they will flower in the 11th lunar month, while pomelo trees treated with lamp-smudging will flower from the beginning of October.

In the last crop, thanks to effective treatment, the tree bore fruit a month earlier. At that time, pomelo production was low so it was sold at a high price. Specifically, sour pomelos cost 50,000 VND/kg, sweet pomelos cost 160,000 VND/kg wholesale and 200,000 VND/kg retail.
"If farmers master the technique of fumigating with lamps, they can divide the trees in their garden into many harvests, avoiding congestion and increasing the value of pomelos," Mr. Cap said excitedly.

The pomelo tree bears fruit in the off-season and has brought high economic efficiency to many old farmers in Binh Minh town.

According to Mr. Le Thanh Thuan - Head of Binh Minh Town Economic Department, pomelo is a crop associated with Binh Minh Town due to its large area of cultivation. At this time, the gardens are in the fruiting stage, people can sell them at a relatively reasonable price and make a good profit.

Mr. Huynh Van Cap's research and treatment of pomelos to produce fruit in different seasons, limiting the impact of weather, has opened up new directions for cultivating this plant, helping people feel more secure to invest and continue to develop their gardens, increasing their income.

With a concentrated planting area of about 30 hectares, Binh Minh town is considered the “capital” of pomelo trees in the West. According to old farmers, pomelo trees appeared in this land several decades ago. If before, people mainly planted sour pomelo trees, in recent years, the area of sweet pomelo trees has been developed, bringing economic value 5-7 times higher.
